Why won't content play?
Troubleshooting Options:
1. Try clearing browser cache: Instructions
2. The installed player may not be RealPlayer, there may be network congestion, or the computer may be behind a firewall. Check to be sure the installed player is RealPlayer or if the player is timing out; keep trying or try again later when the network is less congested.
3. If the computer is behind a firewall you may be able to view
content by altering your player settings using the instructions below. However,
some network administrators block all content regardless of the player settings.
If the solution below does not work or to receive the best quality, it is recommended
that you contact your network administrator and request that they configure
the firewall to permit streaming.
Verify your proxy settings by going to Tools - Preferences - Proxy:
Correct configuration:
- PNA - No proxy specified.
- RTSP - No proxy specified.
- HTTP - Use automatic configuration script: http://wpad/wpad.dat
If PNA or RTSP proxy is set to use proxy or automatic configuration script,
change it to "No proxy".

Why can I play content from some sites, but not
others?
The computer may be behind a firewall that has not been optimally configured to allow streaming
content. However, if a server has HTTP streaming enabled, RealPlayer can rollover the protocol
to receive the file through HTTP instead of the typical (and optimal) streaming protocols. This
is why you can receive content from some sites but not others.
You may be able to get content by altering your player settings using the
instructions below. However, some network administrators block all content regardless of your
settings. If the solution below does not work or to receive the best quality, it is recommended
that you contact your network administrator and request that they configure the firewall to
permit streaming.
For additional firewall support please visit the Real
Networks firewall support page.
Follow these instructions on how to alter your player
settings.
Why does content play, but with pauses and "buffering"?
This is most likely due to congestion on your network. Please return to watch the show On Demand if the buffering continues.
What do I do if I receive the error message "A
general error has occurred"?
You might receive a "General Error" message when using RealPlayer if the clip you
are playing is unavailable or damaged; or if you have a damaged installation of RealPlayer.
To correct this problem you will need to verify if the error occurs with all clips or only one.
Step 1: Try playing other files.
To verify that the problem is not just with the one file, try playing other files on the Oracle
Broadband site. If you can play other files and only receive the error with the one Oracle
file please send mail to digitalmedia_us@oracle.com
and include the following information: (otherwise go to step 2).
- Title
- URL where the link is posted
- Type of content, i.e. Real Media content
Step 2: Remove RealPlayer.
Damaged RealPlayer files may cause general error messages.
Removing them and then reinstalling can resolve these problems.
- Click the Windows Start button, choose Programs, and then Control Panel.
- Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
- Locate RealPlayer Player in the list of installed programs.
- Select RealPlayer and click the Add/Remove button.
- Once you have removed RealPlayer, restart Windows and reinstall it.
What do I do if I receive the error message "Requested
file not found. The link you followed may be outdated or inaccurate",
"Cannot connect to server", "Unable to connect to server", or other cannot connect to server
errors?
"Cannot connect to server" errors generally mean that the RealPlayer did not connect
to the computer that serves the media content (the server); they may also occur because the
computer is behind a firewall that has not been configured to allow streaming content or that
the link you clicked on is out-of-date.
Common "cannot connect to server" errors include:
- "Cannot connect to server"
- "Unable to connect to server"
- "Unable to establish connection to server"
- "Check network transport settings or run auto-configure"
- "The RealPlayer was not able to successfully connect to a server for playback"
- "Cannot connect to server, the link you requested may be inaccurate or out of date"
1. Try clearing browser cache
Internet Explorer
Select Tools Menu > Internet Options > Temporary Internet Files Section > Click 'Delete Files' button
Close the browser and relaunch to try the link again.

Firefox
Select Tools Menu > Options > Advanced > Network Tab > Cache Section > Click 'Clear Now' button
Close the browser and relaunch to try the link again.

Safari (Mac)
Pull down the Safari menu and select 'empty cache'
Close the browser and relaunch to try the link again.
2. To determine if the error is generated by a firewall or an outdated link
please follow the instructions in step 1 below.
Step 1: Play sample clips from the RealNetworks sample page:
- Open http://service.real.com/test/index.html
in your Web browser.
- Click the links there that match the connection speed of your modem. (For example, 56K).
If the links from this site play correctly, RealPlayer is not the cause
of the error. Please send mail to digitalmedia_us@oracle.com
and include the following, otherwise go to step 2.
- Title
- URL where the link is posted
- Type of content, i.e. Real Media content
Step 2: Follow
these instructions on how to alter your player settings.
Note: If the computer is behind a firewall you may be able to get content by altering your player settings using the instructions below. However, some network administrators block all content regardless of the player settings. If the solution below does not work or to receive the best quality, it is recommended that you contact your network administrator and request that they configure the firewall to permit streaming.
