Customer Role: How User Experience Research Is Conducted

Information Display

The Information Display pattern group helps project managers, developers, and designers select visualization techniques such as tables and graphs, which enable users to understand the meaning and significance of the numbers. Numbers are central to a user's understanding of business, and they help users make informed decisions.

Are you looking for the right graph and chart representation?

You should use single-quantity graphs to represent a single quantity or key performance indicator (KPI). Single-quantity graphs may also display target values and one or more thresholds to provide context for interpreting the quantity or KPI. Values may be positive or negative. Single-quantity graphs are appropriate for casual users. If you are considering using multiple graphs, see the Guidelines to Correlate and Compare Graphs.

Gauge Return to Top

Use a gauge to display quantities when precise and accurate readings are important or when it is critical to conserve screen real estate. Simple gauges display a single quantity that can be interpreted in isolation without reference to other values. Threshold gauges display a single quantity within the context of associated thresholds.

Gauge Gauge displays a single-metric status meter See Gauge specification for details on possible configurations.

Dial

Use a dial when accuracy and screen space are less important than the realism of the dashboard metaphor. Simple dials display a single quantity that can be interpreted in isolation without reference to other values. Threshold dials display a single quantity within the context of associated thresholds.
