Workflow tasks are those tasks that require human intervention and that are routed and tracked to completion by the BPEL/Human Tasks system. These tasks can be actionable (in which case, the tasks include an action list in the body of the message) or informational only. An approval task is an example of an actionable task.

Notifications are messages sent to the user by the system. Users receive notifications as a result of their actions or workflow interactions. Notifications are also received as a result of reaching thresholds or milestones in the system. Notifications are routed to the user through different channels that include the worklist within Oracle Fusion, email, short message service (SMS), or fax.

Workflow tasks trigger notifications that are routed to the user offline through different channels. Each human task (actionable or informational only) is automatically converted to a notification that is routed to the user through channels applicable to each user.

From a design perspective, we need to worry only about designing the workflow tasks detail pages (actionable or informational only) for each particular case (for example: expense report approvals, vacation request approvals, purchase order items receipt confirmations, and over-budget informational tasks). The notifications that go along with these tasks will be generated by taking a read-only version of the task details page and routing it to the end user. All workflow tasks follow the same page structure, but differ in the actions available to the user and in the content that they provide. For clarity and convenience, workflow tasks have been divided into the following three patterns.
