For you this week:

We detail a new program that gives researchers the technology they need to solve some of the world's pressing problems, and we bring you the latest thinking on challenges in the age of quantum computing. For developers, we look at new reasons to use an autonomous database and new tools that foster a test-driven approach. Then, we follow a developer as her career swerves in unexpected directions.

Oracle for Research
Life-Changing Research Efforts
A research team is combining artificial intelligence and computer vision technology to help treat diabetics. Another is analyzing rocks’ capacity to absorb carbon dioxide and thereby reduce global warming. A third team created a platform for designing new vaccines. They’re all part of a program, called Oracle for Research, to help researchers take on some of the world’s most pressing problems.
Quantum Computing
Protecting Data in the Quantum Computing Era
Computers based on quantum physics are poised to open vistas in medicine, manufacturing, and finance, but there are also dangers to start preparing for now, says Dustin Moody, who leads the Post-Quantum Cryptography program at the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
