“I learned the art of sharing my success through storytelling.”

Currently an Oracle Cloud Customer Experience director, Win has been leading a fulfilling career with Oracle for more than 24 years. As founder and chairperson of the Oracle Professional Asian Leaders community, she’s passionate about sharing knowledge and helping others succeed.

Win's career advice is to be your own best advocate. Whether you’re looking to take on a new project, interviewing for a new job, or asking for a promotion, you need to be able to speak up for yourself.

"As a Chinese woman, I often thought that if I continued to work hard, my boss would automatically know. Later, I learned the art of sharing my success through storytelling. When providing my manager updates, I would weave my team’s success with specific details of my contributions. This is a great way to be self-sponsoring without appearing self-promoting."

“I look forward to my son living in a more diverse and inclusive world.”

Bill is the director of strategic initiatives for our cloud services organization in Massachusetts. He’s also proud to be first-generation American-born Chinese. A firm believer in paving the way for all immigrants who come to the United States, he spends time helping people of all backgrounds through the Asian American Civic Association.

Bill hopes a day will come when there will no longer be a need to promote diversity and inclusion. "This would mean that unconscious bias is truly marginalized. I look forward to my son living in a world that is even more diverse and inclusive, such that being Asian is just an afterthought and not a label he has affixed to him as part of his description," he shares.

"You can’t wait for someone to lend a hand or to show you the way," he advises. "Often, you need to be active in being inclusive of yourself. You need to reach out and be part of a bigger circle and make it diverse."

“Without diversity of thought and opinions we’d all be the same—and who wants that?”

Bo is director of program management on the Oracle Database Tools team in Seattle. She's also co-chair of the Oracle Professional Asian Leaders group. "I'm the first female in my entire family to go to college or have a career," she reveals. "It's not unusual for women in Korea to never work or even finish school, but instead get married, have children, and look after the household."

But Bo knew early on that she wanted a career in technology, so she learned to code on her family's first computer and started her career as a web developer in the mid-'90s. She offers these words of career advice: "Don’t be afraid to speak up. I know some folks feel very uncomfortable talking about their own success, but we need to celebrate what we’ve accomplished. If we don't, who will? If there's something that you feel very passionate about, share your opinion. If you don't, that perspective may never be considered when it could’ve been a great idea."

“Find a mentor or role model and learn everything you can from them!”

As a student, Aparna aspired to be a data engineer. So, after completing her master’s degree, she knew exactly where she wanted to apply. "When I thought about data and databases, the first company that came to mind was always Oracle," she remembers.

Aparna often comments on the similarities between coding and cooking—another one of her passions. She also believes there’s a recipe for success with a very special ingredient at the center of it all. "Learn! Learn! Learn! Grab all the knowledge you can," she enthuses. "Most importantly, find a mentor or role model and learn everything you can from them."

As a member of Oracle Professional Asian Leadership, Aparna gets many opportunities to share her heritage (and her recipes!) with her colleagues. “I joined OPAL because I love volunteering for events and being part of a group; I’ve been happily surprised by how much mentoring and sharing of knowledge it also provides!”
