The iconic global convenience store chain consolidated production and disaster recovery for Oracle E-Business Suite and experienced a 30X performance increase versus on-premises.

In North America, 7-Eleven’s enterprise infrastructure group oversees the infrastructure for the region’s core support center applications. The business depends on its extensive Oracle footprint, which includes Oracle Exadata to support its Oracle E-Business Suite ecosystem. This ecosystem contains Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition, Agile Product Lifecycle Management, Oracle Retail Merchandise Operations Management, Oracle Data Integrator, Oracle Data Relationship Management, Oracle Traffic Director, Oracle SOA Suite, Oracle API Gateway, and Oracle Service Bus.
7-Eleven’s infrastructure environment had no disaster recovery (DR) in place for these essential business applications. If a true catastrophe were to strike, it would have no disaster recovery instances to which it could failover. The company also wanted to lower the total cost of ownership of the infrastructure that supports its production applications but retain the same performance and high availability. In addition, there was a corporate mandate to modernize IT and undergo a digital transformation. Moving to the cloud would be the foundational framework for this strategic initiative.
Why 7-Eleven Chose Oracle
7-Eleven explored other cloud vendors but in the end decided to keep its data on Oracle Exadata because Oracle offered more scalability and resiliency than any other solution on the market. “Oracle Cloud Infrastructure was undeniably the clear choice,” said Sanjay Date, senior program manager of the enterprise infrastructure group. “There is no better solution for databases than Exadata, and Oracle is the only cloud that offers it.”
In addition, because Oracle applications are so integrated into the business, it was crucial that they be able to migrate without rearchitecting the on-premises solution. “Our [Oracle E-Business Suite] environment is extremely complicated,” elaborated Date. “We have between 150 and 160 integrations with external back-ends, mainframes, and literally thousands of small applications that provide geographical data, pricing, and process calculations. We needed a solution that could make our migration as seamless as possible.”
7-Eleven worked with Oracle Consulting Services to design and implement the DR project for its key Oracle applications. The team was able to create an environment that mirrored the one on premises, leveraging Exadata in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. It also used Oracle Maximum Availability Architecture for cloud deployments and unique features such as Oracle Active Data Guard and Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) that are only offered through Oracle Cloud.
In less than 16 weeks, 7-Eleven was able to create the DR environment in the cloud and successfully test the failover of its applications and database to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure—a project record. Additionally, the 7-Eleven team saw performance benefits immediately on failover. As a test, it logged into Oracle E-Business Suite to change an address that caused a Data Relationship Management record to change—an activity that used to take around 10 minutes to complete on premises. With Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, the change was completed in about 20 seconds, 30x faster than before.
Based on the positive experience of running applications in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure during the DR test, 7-Eleven accelerated the production move to the cloud. It has now moved its core Oracle E-Business Suite and Data Relationship Management applications into production in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure and have ongoing projects to move second-tier applications as well as dev/test environments. As part of the move, 7-Eleven was able to decommission 60 on-premises services.
