Arlington Orthopedic Associates, P.A. Improves Patient Care and Outcomes by Providing Data-Driven Support to Doctors

We truly believe that Oracle Business Intelligence Cloud Service could revolutionize the healthcare industry. With the Oracle solution in place, we can measure and manage data in ways we could not before—giving our doctors the support they need to improve our patient care and quality of life.

— Barry Howell, CEO, Arlington Orthopedic Associates, P.A.

Arlington Orthopedic Associates, P.A. (Arlington Orthopedic) provides orthopedic care to the Dallas and Fort Worth area and is one of the largest orthopedic practices in North Texas. Arlington Orthopedic specializes in sports medicine, orthopedic surgery, spine care, joint replacement and reconstruction, and the care of bones, ligaments, tendons, muscles, and nerves in adults and children. Its services also include physical medicine and rehabilitation, as well as state-of-the-art imaging and diagnostics services, along with physical therapy.

Business Challenge
  • Enable physicians, surgeons, and support staff to provide a higher level of patient care by making it easier for them to access important information, often scattered across multiple systems
  • Arm physicians and managers to care for people wherever and whenever through automatic mobile access to critical data
  • Implemented Oracle Business Intelligence Cloud Service to enable Arlington Orthopedic  to extend its position as a leading independent orthopedic practice that betters the lives of more than 70,000 patients from around the world annually
  • Provided insights into trends—such as readmission rates and waiting room times—getting Arlington Orthopedic’s physicians and surgeons powerful information when they need it, which helps them provide the highest quality care and improve patient outcomes
  • Improved physician performance by fostering positive competitiveness between them through the ability to compare to each other through granular drill down capabilities into their profit and loss statements, accounts receivable information, patient outcomes, and more
  • Established a single source of truth for various data sources—including electronic health records, an enterprise resource planning system, Google Analytics, and more—to give physicians and managers access to business-critical information at the click of a button from the device of their choice
  • Enabled business office managers to quickly and easily create interactive dashboards and reports with a rich variety of visualizations comparing procedure codes by physician by surgical case type and payor, for example, to ensure Arlington Orthopedic is getting its contracted insurance rates
  • Gave Arlington Orthopedic a deeper level of detail into its financial data that enabled it to renegotiate its rate with Blue Cross/Blue Shield and refocus those funds on improving  patient care
  • Introduced self-service and automated reporting capabilities, improving transparency and accountability, and making it easier for physicians to upload a 360-degree view of patient data to the BI platform to drive timely, personalized, and more informed decisions about patient care
  • Tracked downstream revenue by integrating with Google Analytics to better understand ad campaign success rates
  • Reduced IT management cost and complexity, freeing resources to focus on delivering better patient care
  • Laid foundation to perform population health management by pulling in quality metrics for physicians from public sources—readmission rates, infection rates, and more—to help them understand how they are performing as doctors
  • Established plans to launch a resource scheduling capability that will enable Arlington Orthopedic to track operator effectiveness (calls dropped, for example), daily schedule utilization, and patient visit trends (no show, cancellation, or reschedule)

Oracle Business Intelligence Cloud Service revolutionized our business. We can now pull back the curtain to manage and care for our patients like never before with enhanced insight across our entire organization.

— Barry Howell, CEO, Arlington Orthopedic Associates, P.A.

Arlington Orthopedic Associates, P.A. purchased Oracle Business Intelligence Cloud Service in November 2015, and began implementation in January 2016. The organization went live in just four short months, in May 2016, with 20 users. The organization plans to expand to 30 users in the near future.

In phase one, which the organization completed in February, Arlington Orthopedic moved its electronic health records data into the Oracle solution. With phase two now complete, the organization is automatically syncing its financials and payroll data into Oracle Business Intelligence Cloud Service. Phase three will encompass more data cleansing and integration to launch population health management.

“I have worked in the healthcare industry for nearly 20 years and have been a part of several business intelligence implementations, most of which took upwards of two years to complete. Oracle Business Intelligence Cloud Service enabled us to launch in just four months, which is truly unheard of,” said Honey Ranario, CFO, Arlington Orthopedic Associates, P.A.
