We chose Oracle’s Primavera project management solution because it offers robust, easy-to-use, anytime, anywhere access to project data across all regions instead of just a single country. We now have consistent view of project status and resource requirements, helping us to maximize our resources and reduce project risk.

— Junichi Masukawa, Associate Director, General Manager, IT Management, Chiyoda Corporation

Chiyoda Corporation, a leading engineering and construction company based in Japan, has built more than 40% of the world’s liquefied natural gas plants, including the recent construction of the world’s largest liquefied natural gas plants in Qatar. The company is also gradually expanding its business into solar and solar-thermal power generation and hydrogen supply. In addition, Chiyoda Corporation is also focusing on delivering aftermarket maintenance and repair services for its plants across Japan, Singapore, and Qatar.

Challenges
  • Provide a single, robust, global project-management platform for planning, managing, and analyzing liquefied natural gas construction projects across all regions to reduce project risk and optimize resource allocation
  • Automate data aggregation for hundreds of past projects from individual subsidiaries, such as liquefied natural gas plants in Qatar, to enhance project-data visibility and accuracy and to support faster decision-making
Results
  • Enabled real-time reporting and analytics by using Oracle’s Primavera integration capabilities with other business applications instead of requiring one month to aggregate hundreds of past projects’ data from each subsidiary
  • Supported decision-making by gaining a consistent view of global resource requirements, enabling managers to compare and analyze resource demands and capacity, such as by analyzing data for budget, labor, and materials used for building liquefaction plants, ensuring more efficient resource allocation to prevent waste and understaffing
  • Gained a single, robust, and easy-to-use, global project-management platform to rapidly track project status across all regions, rather than individual country, enabling managers to identify potential problems to avoid project delays and reduce risk
  • Improved data visibility and enabled users to gain anytime, anywhere access to project data by using a web-based Primavera application
  • Empowered users to easily and quickly update project status through an interactive dashboard, improving staff productivity

Why Oracle

Chiyoda Corporation selected Oracle’s Primavera solution for its capability to enable anytime, anywhere access to project data, globally.

We considered other vendors, but only Oracle’s Primavera P6 Enterprise Project Portfolio Management can meet our business requirements and enable us to manage and track liquefied natural gas construction projects across all regions, rather than just locally. It helped us to optimize resources management and support faster decision-making.

Execution

Chiyoda worked with Chiyoda System Technologies Corporation, one of its subsidiaries and its IT arm with proven track record of implementing Oracle’s Primavera at more than 100 companies. The project team went through intensive discussion with representatives from different departments, including accounting, corporate planning, project management, sales, and human resources to plan, design, and develop business processes for the global project management platform across all subsidiaries. The system went live first in Chiyoda’s head office in Japan, followed by the company’s affiliated subsidiaries in Qatar. The new project management system went live across all companies after piloting.

“Meetings at an early stage of the implementation process were critical to our success. In addition, participants had authority and responsibility across different business functions to ensure that we made necessary decisions after each meeting,” said Eisuke Oki, vice president, deputy division director, global project management division, Chiyoda Corporation.
