With Oracle, we gained the ability to process security batches daily instead of monthly, enabled single sign-on service for 80 web-based and Windows applications, improved user convenience, and reduced IT costs.

— Hiroyuki Kitazawa, Section Leader, Corporate IT Section, IT Management Unit, Chiyoda Corporation

Founded in 1946, Chiyoda Corporation is a leading engineering and construction company, building oil refinery, pharmaceutical, and petro-chemical facilities. It has built 40% of the world’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) plants, including the world’s largest LNG plant, located in Qatar. Through its expanded environmental technology business, focusing on solar, solar thermal power generation and hydrogen supply, the company provides stable energy and resource efficiency for customers across Japan, Singapore, and the Middle East.

Challenges
  • Automate and standardize identity management across all domestic and overseas subsidiaries, including joint-venture (JV) partners, to support global HR management, including recruitment, training, and allocation of personnel across multiple projects, such as LNG plants and petro-chemical facilities
  • Simplify ongoing access-control administration including issuing and deleting user identities for each application to improve operating efficiency and reduce costs
  • Enable secure and rapid data sharing across heterogeneous applications, including enterprise resource planning (ERP) and project management systems, to maximize the use of enterprise systems and ensure smooth construction projects
Results
  • Processed security batches daily instead of monthly by using Oracle Identity Manager to automate the creation, updating, and removal of users from enterprise systems, and enhance security
  • Reduced IT costs and increased user convenience by providing employees with self-service ability to create or reset their password without helpdesk assistance, thanks to Oracle Access Management Suite
  • Ensured smooth operations for all construction projects by providing single-sign-on service for 80 Windows-based and web-enabled enterprise systems, enabling staff to rapidly and securely access data for multiple projects, such as oil refineries and LNG facilities, and boosting productivity
  • Improved operating efficiency by standardizing global user identity policy across domestic and overseas subsidiaries, and enabling users to continuously use the same identity and start work immediately after moving between group companies
  • Decreased burden on IT managers by enabling users to update their own profile and contact information for the published employee directory at any time, thanks to Oracle Virtual Directory
  • Gained a reliable, cost-effective and scalable identity management and access control solution to support future business growth by expanding enterprise authentication infrastructure to a wider range of applications, such as cloud-based applications

Why Oracle

Chiyoda compared a number of identity-management products and selected Oracle Identity Management because of its ability to support identity life-cycle management for existing applications and provide required functionality, including authentication for cloud services, to support future business expansion.

Oracle Identity Management solution had the flexibility and scalability to support our global human resources requirements. It provided a clear product roadmap, while system support is available in multiple languages, enabling us to handle future identity management and access control for global business development.

— Toshio Kajiwara, Technical Leader, Corporate IT Section, IT Management Unit, Chiyoda Corporation

Execution

Chiyoda introduced Oracle Identity Manager 10g first for its domestic subsidiaries, and upgraded to Oracle Identity Manager 11g to include its overseas business divisions and JV partners. The company also adopted Oracle Virtual Directory to integrate decentralized user ID information, and provided a single employee directory for its enterprise information portal. Finally, Chiyoda upgraded to Oracle Access Management Suite to enable single sign-on service for Windows and web-based applications.
