Colegio de Bachilleres Goes Green with Oracle

Share

Oracle Cloud helped us significantly reduce our technology infrastructure operational costs while complying with the Mexican green program that promotes less use of natural resources. We now consume 50% less energy to keep our tech infrastructure running, and we went paperless in most of our administrative activities.

Colegio de Bachilleres Goes Paperless, Saves 50% of Electricity Consumption, and Promotes Carbon Footprint Reduction with Oracle

Colegio de Bachilleres is a high school administrated by the Mexican federal government. It helps meet the demand for educational programs in Mexico City. The school campus is comprised of 20 buildings, as well as 5 study centers, where the Open Teaching System operates. The school system also serves the country’s incarcerated population. In total, some 100,000 students are enrolled in the school system.

In compliance with the Mexican Close and Modern Government program (Gobierno Cercano y Moderno), which promotes less use of natural resources, Colegio Bachilleres was looking for ways to lower its electricity consumption and reduce the use of paper in its administrative activities.

Challenges
  • Reduce the use of paper while improving efficiency of services provided
  • Avoid unnecessary trips of employees and students to the school buildings only to access information, indirectly reducing carbon footprint
  • Decrease the use of electricity and cut costs
Results
  • Implemented Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Object Storage Classic and Oracle Cloud Platform to provide students—plus academic, administrative, and managerial staff–with online access to information on crucial activities, such as student enrollment and grades
  • Eliminated the need to go to school to collect information on enrollment or grades, which helped reduce the carbon footprint in Mexico City, a city with a high level of carbon dioxide emissions
  • Replaced the physical datacenter with a technology solution that runs as a robust virtual machine on Oracle Cloud, reducing electricity consumption by 50%—half of what was needed to power the tech infrastructure in the former physical computer center
  • Reduced drastically the use of paper in daily administrative tasks by 80% as now all school data runs on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Object Storage Classic and is stored on Oracle Cloud Platform, making it easy and safe to access at any time from fixed and mobile devices
  • Avoided an entire revamp of the physical technology infrastructure, which would have had to be replaced due to updates in technology hardware, saving US $210,000 in expenses and eliminating the disposal of older hardware
  • Streamlined and modernized internal and external processes as the application performance improved due to expanded processing capacity, while increasing the entire academic community’s quality of life
  • Enabled the school’s IT team to dedicate more time to innovation and new digital initiatives with the new stable tech infrastructure, which led to a reduction in the use of natural resources—and encouraged paperless administration—and sped up turnaround time for services, while complying with the Mexican’s Close and Modern Government  program (Gobierno Cercano y Moderno)

Oracle enabled us to implement crucial changes that will shape the future, which is one of our core missions as an educational institution. By reducing the use of paper and the electricity consumption, we are not only cutting costs—we’re contributing to preserving the environment and improving our community’s quality of life.

Execution

Colegio de Bachilleres carried out a gradual migration to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Dedicated Compute Classic, taking three months to go live. The IT team performed tests and worked during off hours—nights, weekends, and holidays—so users would not be affected and to ensure that the transition would be a transparent process.

“We decided on Oracle Cloud because we believed in its enormous potential, despite the fact that there was no great penetration in Mexico of this concept for productive environments yet. Since we are having great results, senior managers are more convinced everyday about the benefits of using Oracle Cloud,” said Noé Reynoso Rojas, Director of Statistics and Information and Communication Technologies, Colegio de Bachilleres.
