Cray Transforms its Configure, Price, and Quote Processes with Oracle

Cray Inc. is at the forefront of developing advanced computing solutions for the world’s most complex science, engineering, and analytics challenges. Its supercomputers, storage and data management systems, and data analytics solutions are extremely complex and built to unique client specifications. As a result, the company has a similarly complex configure, price, and quote (CPQ) process.

Cray had long relied on a spreadsheet-based CPQ system, but it was prone to version-control issues and could not provide the level of auditability needed to meet Sarbanes-Oxley and other government contracting requirements. Cray looked to Oracle Configure, Price, and Quote Cloud (Oracle CPQ Cloud) to drive more consistent pricing, increase governance, boost productivity, deliver new business insight, and improve their customer experience.

Challenges
  • Improve speed, accuracy, and auditability in configuring and pricing the company’s complex supercomputing, data management, and analytics solutions
  • Eliminate rule version control issues associated with a spreadsheet-based CPQ process
  • Enable employees to efficiently and securely configure and price products and submit quotes from any location—in the office and on the road
  • Gain new business insight and efficiency by connecting CPQ data to the company’s enterprise resource planning (ERP) and customer relationship management (CRM) systems
Results
  • Automated and transformed Cray’s CPQ process—improving its efficiency and accuracy—with Oracle CPQ Cloud
  • Accelerated the process of making CPQ rule changes from days (to download the new changes) to minutes—significantly boosting productivity and ensuring more accurate pricing and quotes
  • Gained more accurate and consistent configuration and pricing, reducing the amount of time that financial analysts spend analyzing deals and expediting bid submission to potential customers
  • Improved transparency and auditability of the CPQ process to satisfy Sarbanes-Oxley requirements thanks to the systems automated controls and auditability
  • Ensured the security of sensitive supercomputing pricing information and protected the system from unauthorized users with Oracle’s secure cloud solution
  • Eliminated version control issues and improved quote accuracy with Oracle CPQ Cloud, which ensures that all users are using the same and most up-to-date configuration rules and pricing
  • Boosted user productivity by empowering them to submit quotes from any location, and effectively and accurately create configurations for the company’s supercomputer, storage and data management, and analytics solutions
  • Gained a highly secure solution that meets specifications for government contracting as well as Sarbanes-Oxley auditing requirements
  • Empowered Cray managers with greater insight into true costs and profitability of specific projects to drive continuous improvement thanks to integrating CPQ data with the company’s CRM and ERP systems
  • Eased system administration burden for IT team and gave line of business users greater autonomy with the cloud solution

At the time we selected Oracle Configure, Price, and Quote Cloud, it was the only solution that could meet our rigorous requirements around flexibility, auditability, and security. It plays an important role in our organization.

Execution

Cray integrated Oracle CPQ Cloud with its ERP and CRM systems to optimize enterprise-wide visibility into vital configuration and pricing processes. It also ensures accurate and consistent data across all three systems. This integration delivers greater insight into deal profitability and the true costs of a project, and fuels continuous improvement initiatives.
