HAVI Leverages Oracle Exadata to Unleash Supply Chain Power

Share

Oracle Exadata provides us the high performance that we need for our supply chain forecasting workloads on premises, while the cloud solution enables us to achieve cloud economics and the scale necessary in the event that we ever have a disaster.

HAVI Leverages Oracle Exadata and Oracle Cloud to Consolidate Databases and Improve Performance by 35%

As a global company that innovates, optimizes, and manages the supply chains of leading brands in food service, HAVI is a behind-the-scenes player in the quick-service restaurant (QSR) arena, but is on the front lines of technology-driven innovation. For one of its QSR customers, HAVI computes 5.8 billion supply forecasts every day—drilled down to the individual ingredient level—for 24,000 restaurants across the globe. With data points and locations continuing to grow, HAVI’s on-premises infrastructure was reaching capacity.

To meet its needs, HAVI consolidated 34 databases onto 1 quarter rack configuration of Oracle Exadata Database Machine X6-2. It also connected the Oracle Exadata solution to a disaster recovery solution in the cloud using Oracle Cloud Infrastructure FastConnect Classic and Equinix Cloud Exchange to kick-start its move to the cloud.

HAVI Accelerates Supply Chain Performance with Exadata

Challenges
  • Address constrained capacity on current on-premises IT infrastructure with a solution that aligns with the organization’s cloud-first strategy
  • Produce more than 5.8 billion timely and accurate daily forecasts for over 24,000 restaurants worldwide
Results
  • Consolidated databases from 4-2 node RAC servers onto 1 quarter-rack configuration of Oracle Exadata Database Machine X6-2, resulting in 25% to 35% performance gains versus the previous infrastructure
  • Enabled HAVI’s cloud-first strategy by leveraging a joint Oracle and Equinix solution to deliver the high performance needed for running its workloads on premises and backup to the cloud
  • Leveraged Oracle Cloud Infrastructure FastConnect Classic to secure approximately 15 terabytes of archived daily logs with a low-latency, stable disaster recovery (DR) solution in the cloud—resulting in a cost savings of approximately 35%
  • Performed almost 90% of production Exadata workloads at 100%, and 60% running at 200% faster, enabling non-Exadata as a DR solution for the Exadata databases with Exadata and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure FastConnect Classic
  • Moved backups from Data Domain to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure—eliminating additional expenses related to adding capacity to its on-premises hardware, and giving HAVI elasticity on its existing Oracle Exadata solution for improved scalability
  • Took on additional workloads without increasing headcount across infrastructure and database services teams by integrating Exadata Database Machine with its Oracle Cloud disaster recovery environment
  • Met HAVI’s requirement for elastic scalability without performance degradation to stay ahead of its QSR clients’ projected worldwide growth

We were most impressed with the speed with which we could develop and implement the custom solution. It was a very fast process—a great example of partnering and then moving quickly from proof of concept into live production. Together, Oracle and HAVI ran eight POCs over three months and fully developed the system over the course of another three months.

Execution

HAVI chose Equinix not only for its global footprint that closely matched its own, but also because of its ability to interconnect customer to cloud network ecosystem. One of the crucial capabilities HAVI sought was the ability to leverage Oracle Cloud to complement its on-premises solution. The performance of Oracle Exadata proved to be 3 to 10 times faster than HAVI’s benchmark, while XtremeIO was only 2 to 3 times faster than its baseline. Additionally, the price performance proved to be much better with Oracle Exadata, making the decision very straightforward for HAVI.
