With Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Compute Classic and Oracle Database Cloud Service, we avoided a US$35,000 equipment warranty fee and improved the capacity and reliability of our technology infrastructure. These solutions also enhanced security while endorsing our plans to expand our business within Nicaragua.

MPeso Reduces Maintenance Costs by 25%, Eliminates US$35,000 Warranty Fee, and Leverages Data Security with Oracle

Founded in 2011, MPeso operates an account-based ticketing system for public transportation in Managua, Nicaragua, and manages all active 900,000 transportation cards—called TUC in the city. It offers several ways for users to recharge these cards: via its website, mobile application, and at their 1,500 points-of-sale across the city.

MPeso’s top managers sought a robust solution that could help improve the system’s performance and support the growing volume of information being processed—it handles more than 600,000 daily transactions. They also wanted a scalable solution that would support this growth while saving costs on warranty renewal, technical support, and license fees.

Challenges
  • Reduce costs, including an annual warranty renewal fee of US$ 35,000 to continue using its old technology infrastructure, plus additional costs associated with technical support and software license fees
  • Expand storage capacity while ensuring high performance, despite the high volume of transactions—MPeso’s system processes 600,000 transactions each day
  • Improve technology infrastructure safety
Results
  • Deployed Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Compute Classic and gained a more robust, reliable infrastructure that is well-suited to handle a large volume of financial transactions
  • Cut US$35,000 in expenses of hardware warranty renewal fees by running the infrastructure on Oracle Cloud
  • Reduced costs associated with technology maintenance by 25%—this maintenance is now covered by Oracle
  • Eliminated the need to purchase additional physical servers whenever MPeso has to expand its capacity to cover increases on the volume of transactions, ensuring zero system downtime
  • Boosted MPeso’s plans to expand its transport card services to other cities in Nicaragua as it gained an elastic, capacity-on-demand database with Oracle Database Cloud Service
  • Eliminated the risk of physical server damage and enhanced the database’s backup and recovery capabilities while improving security, which is crucial in a system that has a high social impact
  • Enhanced the TUC card management as Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Compute Classic creates reports and easy-to-read charts that help the company monitor usage and performance

We chose Oracle based on its reputation as a reliable provider and our previous great experience with its team, which always provided excellent support to our on-premises database. And of course, Oracle Cloud also provided fantastic savings.

— Luis Mena Gonz├ílez, IT Manager, MPeso

Execution

“The implementation process ran within our schedule: the entire process took four months, one of them only for data migration. We were very careful during the database configuration process and performed numerous tests to make sure everything would run safely and smoothly.” — Luis Mena González, IT Manager, MPeso
