By integrating 20 legacy database servers for our investment trust sales system into four Oracle Exadata Database Machines, we can provide information to customers 136x faster, enhance our competitive advantage, and support transaction growth for the next 10 years at lower costs.

— Tomoshiro Takemoto, Senior Managing Director, Division Manager, Cloud Computing Service Division, Nomura Research Institute Ltd.

After the merger between the former Nomura Research Institute (NRI) and Nomura Computer Systems, the current NRI significantly restructured its business and became the largest consulting firm and IT solutions provider in Japan. It has four key lines of business: consulting services; financial IT solutions; industrial IT solutions; and platform services.

With innovative and forward-looking business models, NRI developed BESTWAY, a financial cloud platform that provides investment trust over-the-counter (OTC) sales services to users from 109 financial institutions, such as life- and general-insurance companies, investment-trust organizations, and banks, including major commercial banks, trust banks and regional banks holding approximately 80% of shares in the investment trust.

Challenges
  • Consolidate 20 legacy database servers for the investment trust over-the-counter (OTC) sales system into an integrated database platform to improve daily batch processing speed and increase storage capacity to support future data growth at lower costs
  • Provide investment trust information, such as daily shares performance report, to investors faster and enhance competitive edge in the financial services industry
  • Ensure high availability of the investment trust OTC sales system to minimize disruption to time-critical financial services transactions and further enhance service quality provided to financial institution customers such as banks and insurance companies
Results
  • Shortened daily batches by two hours and monthly batches by 18 hours by implementing a high-performing and scalable Oracle Exadata Database Machine, enabling the company to provide faster response to customers, such as banks, and elevate service quality
  • Reduced data-center operating costs, such as power consumption, by integrating 20 legacy database servers for the investment trust OTC sales system into four Oracle Exadata Database Machines
  • Enabled OTC sales to rapidly provide customers with investment trust information, such as shares performance history and banks’ investment risk, and increased competitive edge by using Oracle Exadata Storage Server to accelerate SQL operations and minimize bottlenecks
  • Increased storage capacity by 8x by using Oracle Exadata’s Hybrid Columnar Compression and Smart Flash Cache technology to support high-volume growth in financial transactions over the next 10 years
  • Gained a highly reliable financial cloud platform for banking customers by using Oracle Auto Service Request to automate service requests for hardware faults and leveraging Oracle Premier Support for Hardware’s certified functional safety engineer to accelerate issue resolution and ensure fast system recovery

Why Oracle

NRI chose Oracle Exadata for its high-performance and reliable database platform, which could support continued significant growth in the company’s transactions. In addition, Oracle Exadata met NRI’s business requirement to ensure high service quality for its financial cloud and reduce operating costs.

Only Oracle Exadata and Oracle Premier Support for Hardware could provide end-to-end support for hardware and software, ensuring accelerated resolution processes and minimizing disruption to time-critical financial transactions.

Execution

As part of the project to integrate major business service platforms into NRI’s financial cloud, NRI sent a request for proposal to various vendors to replace its legacy investment trust OTC sales system. NRI selected Oracle Exadata due to its superior performance, demonstrated in the proof-of-concept. NRI initially used the new system for major banks and regional banks and expanded to disaster recovery site.
