KMG Rompetrol Reduces Infrastructure Costs by US$35,000 per Year, Cuts Emissions by 20%, and Ensures Sustainable Growth by Moving to Oracle Cloud

KMG Rompetrol is a major player in the Black Sea and Mediterranean oil and gas market, operating large refineries and gas stations in Romania, and also provides well services in the upstream area. With the company’s continued growth, reaching historical production levels the previous year, it was looking to reduce IT infrastructure costs and increase scalability while continuing to decrease its environmental footprint, aligned with domestic and international regulations.

Challenges
  • Meet company growth targets in line with increasing European and Asian demand for oil and gas products by moving to a scalable IT infrastructure, while reducing cost and environmental impact
  • Ensure high performance, availability, and stability of KMG Rompetrol’s critical Oracle E-Business Suite applications without spending time and considerable effort
  • Simplify database backups and maintenance of servers that were becoming increasingly outdated and for which broken components were difficult to source
  • Increase data security while ensuring full compliance with fiscal and personal data legislation for many years to come, such as the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and Romanian financial legislation
Results
  • Reduced infrastructure and operational costs, increased application performance, and minimized energy consumption by migrating Oracle E-Business Suite from a rented datacenter to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, greatly contributing to KMG Rompetrol’s sustainable development goals
  • Improved performance and increased availability of Rompetrol’s key business applications by deploying Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Compute Classic and Oracle Database Backup Cloud Service to replace on-premises IBM machines and Linux servers, for which sourcing parts led to delays and performance issues
  • Decreased power usage by more than 4,500 kilowatt hours (kWh) per month, a 20% reduction, by moving to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure and Oracle Cloud Platform—considerably lowering greenhouse gas emissions, a central focus of Rompetrol’s strategy as a key player in the European oil and gas business
  • Eliminated capital expenditures for IT infrastructure and reduced operational costs by US$35,000 per year—including expenses for hosting, hardware maintenance, and server administration
  • Simplified database backup operations using Oracle Database Backup Cloud Service as well as hardware administration, cost monitoring, license management, and compliance, while providing unlimited scalability to meet Rompetrol’s growth plans
  • Increased both infrastructure and data security and ensured full compliance with data laws, including the European Union’s recently amended General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and Romanian legislation which requires all fiscal data to be held for at least 10 years
  • Minimized implementation time and effort by engaging an Oracle Customer Success Manager—achieving a smooth migration from on-premises systems to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure within two months, and full project deployment from conception to go-live within four months

We selected Oracle Cloud Infrastructure because of its cost efficiency, easy administration, and unparalleled data security, which is critical in the oil and gas industry. We looked at other vendors, but Oracle offered the only cloud solution that matches our current and future business needs.
