Ruhr-Universität Bochum Gains Efficiency in Managing More Than 70,000 Identities While Lowering Costs


With little maintenance effort and low costs, we feed our core application RUBiKS with real-time identity data by accessing distributed directory-information services over an internet protocol network. To my understanding, there is no other system on the market other than Oracle Virtual Directory that can achieve that goal at a low total cost of ownership. Founded in 1965, Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB) was the first university established in postwar West Germany. With 20 faculties offering more than 45 undergraduate programs and 65 graduate programs, RUB provides a complete spectrum of studies. Students can create their own innovative curricula combining subjects and courses from various fields. Research at RUB is varied and rich—stretching from neuroscience, plasma technology, medical technology, and computer science, all the way to the study of Shakespeare.

RUB is an internationally known center of excellence in the areas of life sciences, life technologies, and global change. The university’s interdisciplinary approach to research is also reflected in its international graduate schools for young researchers, notably the International Graduate School of Neuroscience and the Graduate School for Chemistry and Biochemistry.

  • Accessed original data for identity verification as opposed to synchronized data, avoiding inconsistencies between the database and the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) server—a key factor that substantially reduced maintenance requirements
  • Centralized all identities and roles in an enterprise directory on Oracle Database, Enterprise Edition, eliminating the need to assign accounts to individual services and substantially accelerating student, staff, and guest access to applications and services
  • Ensured high performance and scalability on demand by deploying LDAP servers—which are easily configured through Oracle Virtual Directory’s prepackaged scripts—working in parallel behind load balancers
  • Accelerated deployment of applications and services by working at all times with a single source of trustworthy identity information, ensuring that each RUBiKS member has on-demand access to the services assigned to his or her role
  • Provided the flexibility to assign RUBiKS accounts with a temporary or a predefined duration, for example to accommodate one-hour visitors, participation in congresses held at RUB, or researchers staying several months at the university
  • Deployed Oracle Real Application Clusters in a seven-node configuration to ensure permanent high availability for identity information regarding RUBiKS
  • Enabled RUB to upgrade RUBiKS seamlessly, on time, and on budget, thanks to the rolling-upgrade capability provided by Oracle Database, Enterprise Edition and Oracle Virtual Directory


Using Oracle Virtual Directory, we can access original data as opposed to synchronized data for identification purposes. That is a unique selling point for Oracle technology in our world. Changes on RUBiKS are immediately visible on LDAP servers because Oracle Virtual Directory does not buffer data, it directly uses the source. So, once you have mapped the LDAP data, Oracle Virtual Directory operates by itself, and its performance depends uniquely on the performance of the services that supply the data. Combined with Oracle Database, Enterprise Edition, we have a stable, secure, and low-cost solution that more than satisfies our needs.
