Trex Streamlines Deck-Product Manufacturing and Keeps More Than 400-Million Pounds of Plastic and Wood Scrap Out of Landfills Annually

We are a pioneer and green leader in our industry and are driven by a commitment to set the standard to create eco-friendly outdoor-living products. Our culture fosters respect for the environment and manufacturing processes that help preserve the outdoors, and we can directly attribute a portion of our growth over the last five years to our implementation and use of Oracle solutions.

— Mary Ann Murphy, Director of Information Technology, Trex Company, Inc.

Since 1996, Trex Company, Inc. has invented, defined, and perfected the composite deck category, becoming the world’s largest manufacturer of wood-alternative decking products. Never content to settle, Trex continues to make strides in outdoor engineering, melding innovation with environmental responsibility and beautiful form with powerful function. Trex is a 2013 Oracle Eco-Enterprise Innovation Award winner.
Business Challenge
  • Provide drill-down visibility into inventory and transaction history, as well as give accurate details on raw material purchases and usage—to ensure the company can manufacture quality wood-alternative decking products
  • Maintain a global leadership position in eco-friendly processes to uphold the company’s corporate global environmental imperative for building design and Trex materials construction
  • Reduce factory refuse dramatically and improve visibility into the amount of recycled products that the company uses in the deck-product manufacturing process
  • Use applications and technology to continually improve green practices while meeting all environmental, health, and safety guidelines, as well as industry regulations
  • Automated core business processes and reporting, reduced inventory by 80%, increased sales, and decreased lead time for partners with integrated applications and expanded visibility, enterprisewide
  • Used Oracle solutions to effectively track, monitor, and measure sustainability initiatives, helping Trex to become the first company in the wood-alternative decking industry to receive an International Code Council Evaluation Service (ICC-ES) SAVE Verification for Recycled Content
  • Gained new levels of efficiency and financial visibility, which Trex’s leadership attributes with helping to drive an increase in the company’s stock price
  • Gained access to online, manual work orders, including raw-materials information, to enable Trex to manufacture its entire high-performance decking portolio from more than 95% recycled content, including reclaimed wood and sawdust, as well as plastic from many common household goods
  • Salvaged and kept more than 400 million pounds of plastic and wood scrap out of landfills annually—more than 2.5 billion pounds from 2007 to 2012, alone—through manufacturing-management solutions that support a proprietary method that recycles factory refuse back into the manufacturing line
  • Helped Trex establish a 95% recycled footprint by enabling it to produce its decking products using less energy and dramatically decreasing the amount of materials that would otherwise end up in landfills—minimizing air pollution and improving air quality; making the most efficient use of raw and recycled materials; and reducing waste by recycling refuse back into the manufacturing line
  • Tracked the number of plastic bags Trex uses annually to make its wood-alternative products by collecting the related data in JD Edwards EnterpriseOne applications to perform analysis in different areas—ultimately using that information to make changes to strengthen the product brand
  • Maintained decking manufacturing equipment 24/7, 365 days annually using JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Capital Asset Management, which is very important to ensure the company meets its sustainability initiatives
  • Used the Oracle solutions to track Trex’s “Plastic Bag Recycling Challenge,” which awards nearly 400 public schools in the Midwest a Trex bench on their property for participation in the effort

The Oracle solutions gave us the flexibility, capacity, and tools that we needed to make significant improvements in our processes to support environmental sustainability. We will continue on our endeavor to protect and preserve the environment and will continually try and improve processes that foster those goals. Our use of Oracle solutions plays an important role in our ability to maintain our position as an environmental leader in our own industry and across other industries. We recognize the value that technology brings to sustainability and will add to our eco-friendly processes with advanced technology from Oracle in the future.

— Mary Ann Murphy, Director of Information Technology, Trex Company, Inc.
