La Universidad Latina de Costa Rica (Universidad Latina), with some 16,000 students, is nationally recognized in areas such as technology, medicine, and dentistry. The university’s mission is to train and inspire ethical, enterprising, and innovative leaders.

At the beginning of 2020, when the university became part of Cintana Education in an alliance with Arizona State University, it needed to update its technology. For example, Universidad Latina already used PeopleSoft for enterprise resource planning (ERP), but wanted to move away from its on-premises services and acquire a cloud solution to meet the needs of its community.

Why Universidad Latina de Costa Rica Chose Oracle

Initially, the decision to implement Oracle Fusion Cloud ERP was based on past experience the Universidad Latina team had with Oracle products. In finalizing this choice, the team also evaluated the Gartner Magic Quadrant, which provides a ranking of vendors with the best products. Oracle consistently scored high in completeness of vision and ability to execute compared to other global technology companies and well-known local vendors.

Universidad Latina has obtained multiple benefits since implementing Oracle Cloud ERP in terms of time, cost, security, and efficiency. For example, the university has reduced by 10 days the time it takes to close its monthly accounts. Also, it eliminated purchase order forms in PDF and Excel, replacing them with a digital self-service model that allows users to make requests from their mobile devices.

In addition, with the business intelligence capabilities included in Oracle Cloud ERP, the university can automate the budget controls that it previously handled manually. Similarly, the Oracle solution has facilitated virtualization, a technology framework that helped the university provide access to information in the cloud so its employees could perform work from home—a critical benefit during the pandemic.

As with any educational institution, efficiency and cost savings are key for Universidad Latina. Eliminating the cost of having its own disaster recovery plan, machines, mirroring equipment, and mirroring processes allows Universidad Latina to be more competitive and lead the digital transformation in the education sector in Costa Rica.

Thanks to the Oracle implementation—including support from Oracle Consulting—Universidad Latina was able to continue providing services during the pandemic without problems. “In the midst of this pandemic, working remotely has been easy,” says Julio Galindo, director of information technology at Universidad Latina. “We had almost a thousand people working at home within 15 days.”

Oracle Consulting helped the university with its migration to Oracle Cloud.
