    Oracle Hybrid Cloud

  • Is Oracle’s future strategy more cloud services, on-premises physical servers, or both? How does Oracle see the scalability and adoption of the hybrid cloud?

    We are rapidly increasing the amount of cloud services we offer, but also developing hardware to be used for on-prem deployment, hybrid cloud, and within our public cloud. Adoption of our hybrid solutions is strong. Many customers need the flexibility to consume cloud services in a specific location, with a greater level of control.

  • Does your “hybrid” cloud manta only mean OCI/on-prem, or are other clouds also included in this vision?

    We today provide connectivity from OCI to Azure in multiple of our regions and believe in truly multicloud, hybrid environments.     Oracle Roving Edge Infrastructure

  • How do I control Roving Edge Devices once they are deployed? What is the cost structure for the service?

    Roving Edge Devices are individually controlled locally (or across the cluster), with connectivity back up to the OCI tenancy. Roving Edge Devices do not require ongoing connectivity to operate; they are designed to operate in a disconnected or intermittently connected model.

  • Are Roving Edge Infrastructure appliances connectable? Could I build a “modular data center” by linking several of them together?

    Roving Edge Devices can be connected to each other to form a cluster. We offer 5 to 15 node clusters. As such, they share control and data planes across the cluster and are managed via a single interface.

  • Should Roving Edge be considered for tougher environments more than for taking advantage of it’s smaller shape and having cloud inside your own data center? What should be the main motivation?

    It’s designed for tougher, intermittently connected or disconnected environments, as well as low-latency scenarios.

  • Will Roving Edge work in a submarine ecosystem? Also, are there limitations in aviation/altitudes?

    Roving Edge Devices are designed to be rugged and operate in various conditions around the world. We are in the process of doing independent lab testing in order to publish specific parameters for harsh environments.

  • Do the same levels of SLAs apply at Dedicated Regions as would at public cloud?

    Yes, the same levels of SLA apply for DRCC. OCI supports and operates the service.

  • Is there any degradation of the services in the Dedicated Region when internet service is disrupted? What level of degradation occurs?

    All the cloud operational services are located on site at the Dedicated Region, so there is no disruption.

  • Oracle operations manages the infrastructure, so what prevents them from accessing my data?

    There is isolation between the parts managed by Oracle (the infrastructure) and those managed by customers. In addition, customer data can be encrypted using customer-controlled keys.

  • What sets Oracle Cloud VMware Solution (OCVS) apart from the competition?

    Fundamentally, we provide customers with full control, unlike our competition. We fully deploy the automated infrastructure, and once we’ve handed off to customers, they have root access and can customize and utilize their VMware tooling as needed.

  • My company is well established in VMware and new in our journey to cloud. Can you give me a couple of examples of workloads to get us started down a successful path with OCVS and VMware workloads? What is the learning curve to use OCVS for staff certified in VMware tools and best practices? Do they have to learn any new tools to manage OCVS in Oracle Cloud?

    OCVS is a customer-managed VMware solution, just like your on-premises VMware environment. The learning curve is not steep. Backup and Dedicated Region use cases are excellent initial opportunities to take advantage of cloud scalabilty and availability for a company new to cloud. These give a company the ability to use existing VMware skills and tools to deploy and maintain workloads to the cloud for business continuity purposes.

  • How does VMware licensing work with the Oracle Cloud VMware Solution?

    Licenses for VMware platform components such as vSphere, vSAN, NSX, HCX are included in the service. Customers can bring their licenses for tooling—including vRealize Suite and others—to the cloud after consultation with their local VMware team.
