    Other cloud providers may grant you credits towards the cloud, but that’s often where they leave it. We partner up to take you beyond the tech—and walk step-by-step with you along the entire research journey. Ours is truly a white glove effort.

    Students who are looking for hands-on experience with Oracle Cloud are invited to try Oracle Cloud for free.

    Oracle for Research Cloud Starter Awards grant qualified researchers a $1,000 credit towards their choice of cloud storage, database and service offerings, like (but not limited to):

    • Archive, object, file, and flex storage
    • GPUs and virtual GPUs (vGPUs)
    • Flexible compute shapes
    • Arm-based Ampere A1 cores
    • Oracle Autonomous Databases for data warehousing, JSON, transaction processing, or app development

    In being granted this $1,000 credit, researchers can get started quickly in hosting, processing, analyzing, and collaborating around their research data on Oracle Cloud.

    Typically, our process usually works like this:

  • How many cloud credits will I be granted via Oracle for Research Cloud Starter Awards?

    The Cloud Starter program currently grants qualified researchers $1,000 to invest in Oracle Cloud storage solutions, services and programs of their choosing.

    For those that need additional cloud credits or resources, we offer another program, called the Oracle for Research Project Award. Recipients receive hands-on consultations with our solutions architects, get introduced to peers for collaborative opportunities, receive assistance in coauthoring/publishing papers, and, have their discoveries amplified to a broad audience. There are additional qualifications to get accepted into this program, including the viability of the data, overall project scope, and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure workload size.

    Cloud credits granted by Oracle for Research may be used only to power workloads directly associated with approved research projects.

  • What if I need more support than the $1,000 granted by the Oracle for Research Cloud Starter Awards?

    We offer a more advanced initiative for researchers, called the Oracle for Research Project Award program, where we fully support you, end-to-end, along every stage of the research process. Members receive additional computational resources like data storage, compute, and networking, but it goes beyond just the tech.

    Our team provides hands-on consultations and workshops with our solutions architects, introduces you to peers for collaborative opportunities, assists in coauthoring and publishing papers, and generates awareness for your discoveries by amplifying them to a broad audience.

    We give you your own, hands-on customer service representative.

    And, for select researchers, we also provide fellowships and build collaborative computational research centers.

    Oracle for Research’s cloud offerings work with many different programming languages. Whether your organization has built your data environment in R, Python, C, Java or Linux (Ubuntu, RHEL, CentOs, etc), we can bridge the gaps—without you yourself needing to personally learn complex languages.

  • Will you help me with more than just cloud apps and cloud infrastructure? Like, will you help me with things like finding research grants?

    Believe it or not, yes. We want to be a true partner in every way, and we assist our customers in ways they might not expect. Part of that process is making sure researchers get the grants for the cloud storage and processing power you need to bring your big ideas to life. We’ll also help you with marketing, and awareness, when it comes to your research.   • What do I do if I have any technology problems and need tech support?

    Participants can use their assigned customer support identifier (CSI) to file support requests at https://support.oracle.com.

  • Do you provide artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) solutions?

    Yes: from autonomous databases to analytics with out-of-the-box, built-in machine learning and AI capabilities, we do offer next-generation offerings.

  • I like my research environment to run in Linux, but CentOS is sunsetting. What can I do?

    Many of our scientists prefer open source or open data options for their research. In light of Red Hat’s sunsetting of CentOS, we’re finding an increase in customers migrating over to Oracle’s Linux platform. It may be a viable option for you.

  • Does Oracle for Research and its programs/products do anything to help me with data reproducibility?

    Yes. When we build for researchers, we always think about how we can find ways to help them analyze, automate, publish, standardize, and track their scientific data in a reproducible way. Security and consistency are our cornerstones

  • Can I cloudburst with Oracle Cloud?

    Yes, you can cloudburst with Oracle Cloud! When you have so much research data that it overclocks your IT systems, Oracle Cloud can help scale the workloads on an on-demand basis. Cloudbursting spreads the load to the public cloud, creating a hybrid cloud.

  • What kind of technologies does Oracle Cloud work with?

    We partner with a variety of technology and software vendors and we try to give as much choice as possible. Whether that’s OpenNebula or GraalVM, or whatever you’ve built on, we’re ready to support it. Oracle Cloud plugs into a vast cloud app marketplace, which offers access to Folding at Home, the NVIDIA GPU Cloud, Kinetica, and more.

  • How can the cash funding be used?

    The grant should be used as described in the project application. Frequent uses include funding students or staff, conference travel, and lab upgrades, though other uses also have been identified.

  • What is the value of the Oracle Cloud credits awarded?

    The value of the Oracle Cloud credits awarded varies by project based on the computing needs described in the project application. Our goal is to provide sufficient Cloud credits to cover all the work described in the project application to assist the researcher to completion.

  • What kinds of projects is Oracle interested in for this program? (e.g., publication-driven vs. development-oriented)?

    The Oracle for Research Fellows program supports basic, applied and translational research across all disciplines. The strongest applications are for projects doing novel work, that have the potential to significantly advance the state of knowledge in the field, that will receive significant benefit through access to Oracle Cloud, and that have wide-ranging positive impact in the world. Interdisciplinary and cross-institutional projects are welcome; the lead PI must meet eligibility requirements (PDF), and the award will be made to the lead PI’s institution.

  • Is there a page limit for the “Project Details” section in the Application Form?

    While there is no page limit, the strongest applications will provide a summary project description that contextualizes the project; explains complex or specialized science or other information for non-experts; explains the work and how the funds and Cloud credits will be used; and describes the potential impact of the project. Detailed descriptions of tactical activities within the project are not required. In most cases, a successful “Project Details” section is at most 2 pages, or 3-5 paragraphs.

  • Can I apply again?

    Yes; however, if not selected in the previous submission cycle, it may be worth revisiting the style in which you apply.

  • What does the Fellows Program include?

    The Oracle for Research Fellows Program includes direct research funding, computational resources, technical support, and various other kinds of assistance a researcher may need.

  • How many proposals may I send in?

    A researcher may only send in one proposal per Fellowship cycle.

  • How are proposals selected?

    Each application goes through an in-depth review by our internal Fellows Review Committee and Panel.

  • What are the other benefits of being a Fellow?

    • PR and marketing support from Oracle over the course of the project, including coverage in at least three Oracle for Research blog articles
    • A supported Oracle for Research webinar to share their project
    • Marketing support for each Research Fellow to attend and present their work at one research conference within two years of the award date
    • COVID-permitting, semi-annual on campus visits by at least one member of the Oracle for Research team to offer opportunities for collaboration, technical advising, or campus workshops to advance the project
    • COVID-permitting, one in-person celebration event for Research Fellows to meet and network with each other, incoming Research Fellows and Oracle experts and team members
  • What documents do I need to send in?

    A CV or biosketch, and a completed Oracle for Research Fellows application detailing the proposed use of funding, the value to the research project, the applicant's institution, the larger research community, and Oracle.

  • What type of project promotion will I receive by becoming a Fellow?

    Researchers will receive PR and marketing support from Oracle to create visibility to their project at the time of the award, throughout the project, and following the publication of research results.
