There’s an old expression: “You can’t really understand trigonometry until you study calculus.” Some of us study the internals of the JVM, and the finicky details in the Java language, because we are merely curious about how things work. Some of us study the internals because we are working to move the platform forward. And some of us dive deep because we want to improve our everyday programming skills.
In this light, as we prepare for the release of Java 17, here is a collection of articles that will take you backstage with the JVM and the Java language. I’d like to thank the many authors of these articles: Cédric Beust, Andrew Binstock, Ben Evans, Chris Hegarty, Michael Heinrichs, Michael Kölling, Chris Newland, Joakim Nordström, Oleg Šelajev, Raoul-Gabriel Urma, and Richard Warburton.
Take care, Alan Zeichick Editor in Chief, Java Magazine @zeichick
P.S. Does your work involve security or encryption? Here’s a newly published document that lays out the cryptographic roadmap for the JRE and JDK, including security algorithms and associated policies and settings.
