Java 17 is officially here! Read all about it!

The latest release of the Java platform is now generally available.

I can’t adequately explain the excitement when a new version of Java goes live. There aren’t surprises: Those of us who follow the JEPs closely know exactly what’s coming out and when. The calendar is posted, of course: We knew that the rampdown phase for Java 17 was June 10, the initial release candidate was August 5, and the final release candidate was August 19. We’ve known for months that the general availability date would be September 14.

Maybe it’s like a birthday: We know it’s coming, and we’re all ready to celebrate. Except, in this case, it’s a birthday that comes twice each year.

Take a look at the Java 17 JEPs. What are you most excited about? For me, it’s sealed classes and the preview of pattern matching for switch. I’m also excited about the macOS stuff—I’m a Mac user. Can’t wait to migrate to AArch64!
