Opera Oracle is the leader in the hospitality industry. Opera cloud facilitates hotels to mange room bookings. These systems need to be integrated with custom applications and standard software. Oracle Hospitality Integration Platform (OHIP) in combination with Oracle Integration (OIC) accelerate the digital transformation of the hospitality industry. Niall describes a sample hospitality integration between the reservation system into a CRM for sales and marketing purpose. For an overview including a demo please watch the on-demand webcast.

Identity Propagation call from Integration Cloud to SaaS

One of the big challenges that Oracle Integration Cloud developers face is any outbound REST call from Integration Cloud (IC) to Fusion Applications (FA) APIs require a user’s identity.
Although this may seem trivial on the surface, the mechanism to have the identity of a user flow from a client application to IC to FA in a secure fashion is not trivial. However, there is a proven pattern that can be leveraged with Oracle Cloud technologies to solve this problem and the following presentation will illustrate this pattern.

      How to define a Repeating Global Variable by Jorge Herreria
      Summary

      This blog addresses the following use case: "In my OIC Orchestration, when I define a Global variable based on a repeating element (aka unbounded), the global variable is not repeating; I cannot add/append to it"
      The nutshell solution:
      Choose the parent element when defining the global variable
      Details
      Why the variable is not repeating?
      Because of XML Rules: When a global variable is defined, internally it is defining a reference to a XML Document. Any XML Document must have a single instance root element; in other words it cannot be a collection of root elements, even if they have the same element name.
      How Do I Solve my requirement?
      When defining the Variable, choose the parent element of the unbounded element (repeating). That way the XML Document root element will be the parent element, and one of its children will be the unbounded element
      To reference the variable use the location path (xpath) to the unbounded element.
      Example
      Defining vErrors with the intent to use errorDetails repeating element.


      Using Aggregate Functions Sum(), Count() while Processing Larger Files by Phaneendra Bommisetty
      Introduction:
      OIC has the capability of processing huge CSV files (up to 1GB) using Stage "Read File In Segments" activity. In some use-cases, customers require to calculate the sum of a column or count of rows.
      Consider the following payload. Say, we want to calculate the sum of all the values in the column "Amount1". Customers tend to declare a variable upstream to Stage action and keep on updating this variable with the computation done in each chunk of the Stage.
      Solution:
      This blog describes one of the optimal approaches to use the aggregate functions Sum, Count while processing larger files.


      Beating OIC’s FTP File Limits by Phil Wilkins
      OIC has for some time now provided an FTP adaptor and more recently included a full FTP server capability. But both have limits on the file size and capacity. The file constraints (1GB for a file and 500GB for the FTP server) shouldn’t be an issue for day to day activities. But OIC is often used to support SaaS Financials and other cloud solutions which do have monthly process cycles which can generate significant data volumes, for example, payroll data. The question is how to handle such data with such constraints?
      Data Integration?
      There is a school of thought that points to the possibility when handling such large data volumes we should consider using Data Integration rather than a more event-centric integration tool. Personally, I think there is a lot of validity in the argument, and anyone dealing with such bulky data activities should review and question if it is a better answer.
      That said, there are cases where it does stand-up. For example:
      • If an organization is transitioning to a more event-driven or at least micro-batch model, you have to start the transition somewhere, but trying to line up changes everywhere can be problematic, so we have to start somewhere. Building an integration process so you have an event model developed, but in the interim, you need to take that bulk mechanism and convert it to a small stream of events.
      • You may be working with a bulk data extract and only need a small subset of the data provided, it won’t help if the data is also represented using a verbose notation such as XML.
      Other Approaches
      How to overcome the constraint? Oracle databases aren’t so constrained, and SQLLoader can provide an easy means to ingest the data into a staging table. The benefit of this is:
      • if you’re only needing a subset of the data you can pull just those columns from the table.
      • the bulk of the use of XML to be self-describing can be shed through using the DB schema as being more prescriptive.


      Subscribing to Fusion Custom Business Events in OIC by Kishore Katta
      Integration with all Oracle Fusion based Cloud services - like Oracle Financials Cloud , Oracle SCM Cloud, Oracle Engagement Cloud each service publishes Business Events wherein Oracle Integration can subscribe. Events is a great way to broadcast information to downstream systems for Real Time Synchronization
      ERP cloud publishes 2 types of events. In this blog we will see how Custom Business Events can be published in ERP cloud and subscribe in OIC
      • Standard Business Events
      • Custom Business Events
      Whenever we create a new custom object in Oracle ERP Cloud using Oracle Application Composer, custom business events can be published explicitly. Once published, these business events can be subscribed from Oracle Integration (OIC). Business Events are visible for selection when configuring the Oracle ERP Cloud Adapter in OIC as a trigger connection in the Adapter Endpoint Configuration Wizard.
      For each Custom parent Object, OIC supports 3 Standard Events (Create, update, and delete ). Any operations on child custom objects generate update events for the parent custom objects. When a record is created, OIC is notified with record detail information through event handler framework on subscription to any related events.


      Guidelines when moving Integration Workloads from SOA to Oracle Integration by Shreenidhi Raghuram
      Introduction
      The aim of this blog is to guide customers when they set out to migrate their integration solutions from SOA to Oracle Integration (OIC).
      The focus in this blog is to help customers during the creation, configuration of Oracle Integration service instances, and also provide best practices for choosing the right OIC features and integration patterns when developing SOA equivalent integrations on Oracle Integration Cloud.
      The existing SOA workloads could be running in customer data-centers, on-premise or on Oracle cloud. The blog aims to provide high level guidelines when moving integration workloads from SOA to Oracle Integration Cloud.
      To start with the SOA Suite installations could be any of the below -
      • SOA on-premise - Where SOA is installed and managed on-premise or within customer datacenter
      • SOACS on OCI - these are SOACS installation running on customer OCI tenancy in one of the OCI regions worldwide
      • SOACS Marketplace - This is the newer installations which run on OCI and are installed using the SOA images available in Oracle market place
      • SOACS on OCI Classic - These are legacy SOACS installations running on OCI Classic datacenters.


      Integrating Oracle Hospitality Cloud and 3rd party CRM (SFDC) via OIC and OHIP by Niall Commiskey
      This is a typical Opera Integration use case - extract guest details from reservations/profiles and put them into a CRM for sales and marketing purposes. Simple scenario here - create contacts in SFDC for new Opera reservations. Here I query the Profile and Reservations objects in Opera via OHIP and then leverage the OIC SFDC adapter to create the relevant Contacts in SFDC. This will be a scheduled job that runs on a regular basis, ensuring my guest profiles etc are in sync with the relevant contact data in SFDC. Starting point, as usual, is Postman and the starter collection delivered by OHIP.


      OIC and Oracle Hospitality (OHIP) - Getting the most out of Opera APIs by Niall Commiskey
      This is my second post on integrating with Oracle Hospitality Cloud using OIC. The introductory post is here. So let's continue our journey...I preface this post with the usual caveat - I am not an expert on Oracle Hospitality, however, I have been playing around with the apis provided by OHIP.
      So here is the basic scenario - I want to implement the following basic use cases -
      1. room reservation
      2. checkin
      The introductory post covered room reservation, but here is a recap. Think of OHIP (Oracle Hospitality Integration Platform) as THE catalog of APIs for Opera integration and THE Gateway for processing API requests.


      Accessing Object Storage from Oracle Integration by Ankur Jain
      The Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) offers a rich set of services and Object Storage is one of the important services that can be used to store a wide variety of objects of any content type such as videos, images, documents, and so on. Depending on the bucket you created in Object Storage, you can access it from OCI or the public internet.
      In the previous few other posts, you may have seen the usage of an FTP adapter to read/write files which is a traditional approach to store files. So as the digitization of data is on-demand, Object Storage is in high demand to store the data and access it from anywhere.
      You can automate your different document repositories to store data in the Object Storage using the Oracle Integration Cloud to make it a centralized repository.
      You would be requiring few things before you access the Object Storage from the Oracle Integration and store your objects.


      Connecting Hubspot and Netsuite using Oracle Integration (OIC) by Niall Commiskey
      Simple scenario here - I need to sync contacts between Hubspot and Netsuite. Introduction.
      Now I am new to HubSpot - by new I mean really a neophyte - I am trying this out for the first time tonight. I create a HubSpot developer account and get the api key.


      Oracle Integration - Connecting to NetSuite using Token Based Authentication by Subhani Sahib Italapuram
      In this blog, We shall talk about Token Based Authentication(TBA) which is one of the security policies supported by NetSuite adapter in Oracle Integration.
      If you want to use token-based authentication with the Oracle NetSuite Adapter, You should have the following information that is required for creating a connection.
      • Consumer key
      • Consumer secret
      • Token
      • Token secret
      • Account ID
      And to use Token Based Authentication (TBA), you need to complete the tasks given below in the NetSuite application.
      1. Enable Token-Based Authentication
      2. Create Integration record
      3. Create a Role and assign to a User
      4. Create an Access Token for the Integration record, User, and Role
      5. NetSuite Account ID.
      Let us go through the below steps and get the values required for us to create a connection using NetSuite adapter in Oracle Integration.
      1. Enable Token-Based Authentication
      Go to Setup in NetSuite application > Company > Enable Features > Click the SuiteCloud subtab --> Under Manage Authentication section, check the TOKEN-BASED AUTHENTICATION (Please note that the features Client SuiteScript and Server SuiteScript must also be enabled to use token-based authentication with RESTlets, If it is not enabled, please enable).

      Piloting Your Digital Transformation Journey through Modernization by Ravi Pinto
      As organizations evaluate Digital Transformation and consequently, SOA Modernization as part of that exercise, my colleague, Perren Walker, has put together some thoughts that I wanted to share with you. He has penned them in context the aerospace industry. I am sure you will glean some pearls of wisdom here.
      What does aerospace have to teach us about cost-effective IT modernization?
      In my mind, there are many similarities between aerospace platforms and IT systems, not the least both are capital intensive and can experience rapid technological obsolescence. Yet, Boeing has flown an airplane from 1955, some 66 years, and it is expected to fly beyond 2050. How has Boeing been able to continuously modernize an aircraft with such longevity, while remaining a state-of-the-art platform and the best economic choice?
      We’ve selected Boeing’s avionics platform because Oracle SOA Suite customers are looking to achieve similar business returns with their Integration investments. When we look closely, there are 4 parallels between Boeing’s aircraft and Oracle SOA Suite customers, who are driving platform modernization:
      1. An extensible, re-configurable architecture
      With SOA Suite containerization[1], customers can easily configure SOA Suite’s architecture to easily run in the cloud, on-premise or in a hybrid configuration. This protects your investment in existing integrations, while SOA modernization can take place with Oracle Integration.


      SOA Suite Docker Image Release - 21.1.2 by Ravi Pinto

      Helpful Suggestions in setting up SOA suite on Containers by Arun Ganesan
      Oracle SOA Suite On Containers was released by Oracle recently. Here is the quick start guide on how to setup a SOA Suite environment in Kubernetes.

      SOA Suite Image Location:
      The SOA Suite image can be installed from two different locations.

      Business Process Management & Innovation Section

      Process Automation with Process Cloud Service (PCS) – Part 1 by Daniel Teixeira
      Earlier in my career I worked extensively with a Business Process Management (BPM) software called Cordys (meanwhile acquired by OpenText). Had a couple of trainings on BEA Aqualogic BPM Suite (now Oracle). Later on, while working for TIBCO I had several trainings and a bit of project experience with their BPM solution. Most of the BPM concepts are familiar to me, but over the years they became quite rusty So this is a good time to dive a bit more into a component of the Oracle Integration Cloud (OIC). I am talking about the Process Cloud Service (PCS), and this will be a series of posts dedicated to exploring PCS capabilities! Somehow BPM seems to be out of use nowadays and Process Automation became the trendy designation!
      The Concepts
      Processes are based on BPM Notation (BPMN) – “A standard Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) will provide businesses with the capability of understanding their internal business procedures in a graphical notation and will give organizations the ability to communicate these procedures in a standard manner. “
      The Use Case
      In the upcoming posts I will work out a very simple, yet relatable, use case. A process to manage an employee vacation request. Granted, if you are self employed this makes no sense, but if you work for a company with a couple hundred or thousands of employees, then the need to manage this process becomes obvious.
      Departments/Teams internal planning may require a process to manage this, and on top of that, they may have some business rules that need to be implemented ( example: an entire team cannot take vacations at the same time).


      Process Automation with Process Cloud Service (PCS) – Part 2 (Forms) by Daniel Teixeira
      In the previous post I created a simple business process, but with no real implementation details. It was just a framework.
      Now, I will show how to create a Form to start the Process. Remember that there are many ways of stating a process, but for this case the Form is the way to go.
      How to Create a Form
      You can create a Form from two different places.
      1. The Form Menu on the left side. (left pic)
      2. From within the Form properties in the Model. (right pic)
      With this first option you can choose to create a new Form from within PCS, or to bring an ExternalUI – from VBCS for example.
      The second has the advantage of assigning the form directly to the process activity.


      Process Automation with Process Cloud Service – Part 3 (Workflow) by Daniel Teixeira
      In this blog series (part1, part2) I am covering step-by-step how to build and deploy an automated business process using the process cloud service. At this moment we can visually understand the workflow, but with the exception of the Form Start activity there is no real implementation underneath the BPMN notation.
      Approve
      This activity is meant to define the who, the how and the when about the approval step.
      An assignee can be a person or a group. The choice here is whether the approval should be handled in sequence, parallel or with a single assignee.
      For this use case I pick the “Any Single Assignee”.


      OIC Process Correlation: Take Good Care of Your Properties by Jan Kettenis
      The other day we had an issue with correlating process instances which turned out to be caused by some "mistake" we made. Took quite some time to figure it out so I thought I share it with you, hoping it can safe you some time.
      First I will explain what correlation is about (you may want to check out a much more elaborate blog article on how to use it in OIC-Process by Martien van den Akker, or another one from Anthony Reynolds explaining the concept in the context of BPEL). Correlation is in OIC-Process not really different from what it is in Oracle BPM Suite so if you already know that or when you have done it before in OIC you can skip the next paragraph.
      When one process instance is calling another one and of the latter there may be multiple instances, you need a way to make sure the second process calls back the right instance of the first process. That is done by making that the instance to call can uniquely be identified, or "correlated" as it is called. In many cases correlation is out-of-the-box, like for synchronous calls or asynchrounous calls using WS-Addressing. When there is no out-of-the-box correlation, you need to configure it explicitly using what is called "message-based correlation". That means that instances are correlated using a key (value or combination of values) which is (part of) the message that is send from one instance to the other. In OIC that key is called (not surprisingly) the "correlation key" (same as "correlation set" in BPEL). The correlation key has one or more "properties" for which the (combination of) values must be unique in such a way that at any time there cannot be two or more instance flows of the calling process using the same correlation key value(s).


      Extend Oracle application cloud approvals on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure by Mani Krishnan
      Introduction
      Oracle Fusion SaaS applications, such as HCM and ERP, provide the ability to approve certain transaction before they are committed. The rules behind these approvals are exposed to customers through Transaction Console or BPM worklist applications. If necessary, customers can modify conditions of approval rules or add new rules to the rulesets for a transaction. Customers can also configure various aspects of approvals, such as the approval groups, approval exceptions and notifications.
      Approval capabilities in Oracle Cloud Applications, on purpose, do not include complex BPM capabilities. For example, approval rules can use data accessible within the SaaS application, but are not allowed to an external API to fetch data from another application. They also do not permit complex logic such as iteration. Also note that certain SaaS applications, for example, Oracle Sales Cloud, do permit more complex BPM processes through application composer. Refer to product-specific documentation for more information.
      Occasionally, customers might need to externalize approval processes, either because of the complexity of the desired approval processes or because of other reasons such as dependency on external approvers who cannot be granted access to customers’ SaaS applications.


      OIC: Somewhat "Hidden" Feature: Reusable Subprocess by Jan Kettenis
      This blog article describes how to configure input and output parameters for Reusable Sub-processes (BPMN Call Activity) in OIC Structured Process
      It's more than once that I have see that OIC Process developers are not using the Reusable Subprocess in Structured Process, simply because they are not aware that you can pass on arguments to the Start event and from the End event, like you can for processes that start and end with Message Events.
      I will not discuss the benefits of and when to use a Reusable Subprocess, I will save that for a blog posting soon to come.
      The thing is, the parameters are somewhat hidden. You create a Reusable Sub-process by creating a process with a None Start and None End event, as in the picture below. To add parameters to both events you can do it like this:
      1. Click on the Start Event.
      2. From the hamburger menu choose Open Properties. This will show you the propertie of the Start Event, where (probably to your surprise) you cannot find the input parameters.
      With the Properties tab of the Start Event still shown, click anywhere on the process canvas as long as it is not another component (event, activity, flow, gateway). Ta-da!!
