That's great! Here are some tips that will help your JavaOne submission stand out:

Write an abstract that is easy to read and describes the value of the presentation. Do explicitly mention what is being discussed during the session rather than making a blank marketing or strategy pitch. For example, include mention of demonstration, case study, customer/partner participation, quantitative facts, etc.

Submissions should be:

Java-related topics (not technologies such as Flex, .NET, Objective C, etc... unless it's specifically a topic about how such things INTEGRATE with Java)

Non-product pitches (JavaOne is a technology conference!)

Interesting/innovative uses of Java (be creative!)

Practical relevant case studies/examples/practices/etc. (showcase your skills!)

Presentations should offer a unique solution

The last tip is a great reminder: it's not the Java technology itself that matters, but how Java solves a problem. As the principal developer of such game-changing innovations as the CCD flat-bed scanner, optical character recognition, the first text-to-speech synthesizer, and the first commercially marketed large-vocabulary speech recognition technology (among many other innovations), when Kurzweil predicts, people listen.

He began by pointing out that anything progressing at an exponential pace, when viewed in a linear sense, initially appears to be progressing deceptively slowly. But when viewed logarithmically, one can predict profound developments and paradigm shifts. He detailed the exponential progression of the computational space - from vacuum tubes, to transistors, to integrated circuits, to predicted 3D molecular computers that will someday become self-organizing. In 1965, when Kurzweil first arrived at MIT, the sole campus computer had 32k of memory. He then pulled out his Java enabled cell phone, noting that it was "a million times cheaper, and thousands of times more powerful. That's billions-fold increase in price performance since I was a student."

Moore's Law, predicting exponential increases in computational power, is really just one example of what Kurzweil calls "The Law of Accelerating Returns." While a given technology paradigm eventually reaches the physical limits of a particular technology, a new technology paradigm shift ultimately comes along to take its place, as seen with vacuum tubes, the transistor, the integrated circuit, and so on. According to Kurzweil, this principal applies to any information technology, and even biology has now become a part of the information technology space. The Human Genome Project, Kurzweil noted, was only 1% complete half-way through its 15 year time period. But with the evolution of genetic sequencing technology, the project completed right on schedule.

Using this long-term perspective, informed by the exponential patterns of technology development, Kurzweil predicted in the 1980s our current era of small, massively distributed, embedded, and networked computing systems. And this was at a time when few even owned a PC. The server portion of the system employs JDK1.6 and Java EE 6 (Struts application with some exposed Servlets and Web Services), Java Encryption APIs (for secure patient privacy), JDBC (for integration with existent hospital systems) and Java Mail APIs. But the company's latest smartpen offering, the Echo, takes the technology many leaps forward with the advent of an app store that provides Java applications for the pen, such as music, language translation, and more. "We now have about 10,000 developers writing Java apps for this," said Jim Marggraff, Livescribe CEO. Draw a piano keyboard with the Echo, then tap the drawn keys and play music. Or write a phrase in English, tap on it, and hear the phrase spoken in Spanish, Mandarin, or Arabic. Detailing the evolution of tollbooths from human toll takers, to mechanical change counters, to RFID-based facilities such as FasTrak, Perrone's Brian Geiger detailed how their technology takes the concept a quantum leap forward. They've implemented a Java RTS-based solution that uses advanced lasers to measure vehicles at 180 points, every 13 milliseconds, gathering vehicle info in either stop-and-go traffic or at speeds of up to 100 mph. Information gathered includes vehicle type, height, width, length, and speed, and it can register motorcycles, cars, trucks, and tractor-trailers.

The final demo took attendees from smart highways to smarter cars. Marcial Hernandez, from the Volkswagon Engineering Research Lab in Palo Alto, had "Shelly" onstage, an autonomous, self-driving Audi that first premiered at JavaOne 2009, but that has now had many more successful test runs. The ultimate goal of the project, Hernandez explained, is not to have cars driving by themselves, but to augment drivers at the limits of handling, during high-stress, or even during low-stress. Oracle worked closely on the project, providing the Java RTS infrastructure that handles the GPS processing and the monitoring visualizations that communicates with the Stanford system which provides the autonomous driving capabilities.

Hope you had a great JavaOne 2010 conference, and don't forget to look for JavaOne as it goes on the road:

Latin America, December 7-9, 2010 (Call For Papers)

Beijing, December 13-16, 2010

Russia 2011 (date TBD)

India 2011 (date TBD)

Go to the Oracle Technology Network for technical articles and all the latest news for Java Developers.

http://blogs.oracle.com/javaone/entry/stay_in_touch Stay in Touch Tori Wieldt http://blogs.oracle.com/javaone/entry/stay_in_touch Thu, 23 Sep 2010 14:10:17 -0500 JavaOne 2010 develop java javaone

Share

The Oracle Technology Network team has had a blast with you all in the Mason Street tent. Thanks for a great JavaOne and Oracle Develop. Mark Reinhold, Chief Architect, Java Platform Group at Oracle, led with a talk, "Java SE: The Road Ahead."

Reinhold spoke about Java SE 7, 8, and even, potentially, 9 exploring several themes: productivity, performance, universality, modularity, integration, and serviceability. Where is Java SE 7 headed? Reinhold described the decision was made to ship what can be shipped in mid 2011 as Java SE 7, and ship Java SE 8 in mid 2012.

"It's a good, focused plan that will get the platform moving again, and that's good news," said Reinhold. "The clear intent is to have releases on a regular cadence every 8 to 24 months, possibly 36 months at the outside. A platform like Java, to stay alive, needs to keep moving. We are going to keep it moving."

Roberto Chinnici gave a summary of developments in Java EE 6, which includes much that is new. Java EE 6 has several APIs, and a defined a web profile for web application development. It includes some powerful extensibility APIs that will make it simpler to adopt third-party libraries and frameworks and integrate them into your applications without having to do manual configuration. It also includes standardized dependency injection. Finally, Java EE 6 made improvements to existing APIs and made them work together much better than before.

Greg Bollellaa spoke about Java ME and embedded devices. "For every laptop out there, there are a thousand embedded processors grinding away code that some people wrote. There is a lot of code, lot of processors, and lot of opportunity," he explained. To judge from the responses to his blog, this should be a popular decision.

Here are some basics:

Proposed JDK 7 Features

InvokeDynamic byte code and supporting features for dynamic languages

Fork/Join Framework and related concurrency and collections API enhancements for improved multi-threaded Java code

Small Language Enhancements (most of "Project Coin") for higher developer productivity and cleaner, more concise Java code

Session Description Protocol (SDP) and Stream Control Transport Protocol (SCTP) support

New I/O APIs - A flexible filesystem API, and asynchronous I/O

Support for updated standards - Unicode, localization, security, cryptography, XML and JDBC

JVM performance improvements

Proposed JDK 8 Features

Lambda expressions ("closures") for higher developer productivity and better leveraging of multi-core CPUs

Small language enhancements (Remaining parts of "Project Coin")

A Java-native module system ("Project Jigsaw") to simplify the construction, packaging, and deployment of applications

JVM start-up time and ergonomics improvements

I'm sure we'll hear more about his vision for the platform at the General Technical Session today, 9/21, which I'll be covering.

Again, for more details, see JDK 7.

http://blogs.oracle.com/javaone/entry/java_champion_jim_weaver_announces_winner_of_the_javafxpert_ria_exemplar_challenge_at_javaone_1 Java Champion Jim Weaver Announces Winner of the JavaFXpert RIA Exemplar Challenge at JavaOne teeebird http://blogs.oracle.com/javaone/entry/java_champion_jim_weaver_announces_winner_of_the_javafxpert_ria_exemplar_challenge_at_javaone_1 Tue, 21 Sep 2010 13:03:22 -0500 JavaOne 2010 challenge exemplar javafx javafxpert ria

Share

In October of 2009, Java Champion Jim Weaver announced the JavaFXpert RIA Exemplar Challenge, which was intended to "Create an application in JavaFX that exemplifies the appearance and behavior of a next-generation enterprise RIA (rich internet application)".

Weaver is announcing the winner in each of his JavaOne 2010 sessions.

And the winner is..........

Abhilshit Soni, a 24 year old Software Engineer living in Mumbai, India, who holds a Bachelor of Technology in BioInformatics and currently works with Zycus as a Software Engineer in the Product Engineering Team. Soni has been involved in developing web-based enterprise applications based on Java EE and Spring technologies for almost three years. He won for his Beechcraft Loader application, which "tries to solve a typical engineering problem of loading cargo containers into a Cargo aircraft. It needs a proper way in which your aircraft should be loaded with containers so that the resultant center of gravity of the aircraft is stable."

Each of the participants was asked how their entry exemplifies the appearance and behavior of a next-generation enterprise RIA. Soni's response:

"To an end user the enterprise RIA is more about the way user sees the information shown in the application. All that an end user expects from an enterprise RIA is to access the information in the fastest and coolest looking way. The definition of coolest may be interpreted as drag drop interfaces, animation and effects, different data viewing formats, but not at the cost of performance. By using JavaFX I have tried to achieve the same to an extent by adding drag-drop spot data update in multiple formats like grid and charts, and also onclick zooms, animations and effects with performance as priority."

Further details are here.

Congratulations go to Abhilshit Soni for his fine work and to Jim Weaver for putting together a contest that brings out the best in JavaFX developers!

http://blogs.oracle.com/javaone/entry/otn_night_recap Java Directions Keynote + OTN Night programmarketingOTN http://blogs.oracle.com/javaone/entry/otn_night_recap Tue, 21 Sep 2010 11:18:26 -0500 JavaOne 2010

Share

Thomas Kurian has delivered his "Java Strategy & Directions" keynote, which I cannot summarize any better than Oracle ACE Director Lucas Jellema. Through Tuesday, a team of world-champion extreme skaters and bikers are performing BMX bike, inline skating, and street skating tricks. Many of the athletes are internationally known in their sport, and a number have medaled at the X-Games, including inline skate rider Jaren Grob and half-pipe BMX rider John Parke.
Among the performers is one of Oracle's very own - Lynn Cooper, Director of Demonstration Solutions Services at the Denver, Colorado tech center. Cooper, who joined Oracle in 1985, has been performing and competing in freestyle skateboarding for 35 years and turned pro in 1988. He says the connection between his two passions - technology and skateboarding -- has always been clear to him: "Oracle offers extreme technology solutions with offerings such as Exadata and Exalogic," he says. "Extreme technology, extreme sports - it all ties in."

Putting up a half-pipe skate ramp in the middle of the street was pretty extreme itself; organizers had to ask the city of San Francisco to allow them to temporarily remove a MUNI bus cable in order to make it fit. The shows, however, are worth it.

Here is a list of show times through Tuesday night:

Tuesday, Sept, 21:
10:45 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
1:00 - 1:30 p.m.
4:00 - 4:30 p.m.
5:30 - 6:00 p.m.
