Description

Users who are logged into a browser-based Oracle Fusion application have the ability to receive notifications inside the browser. These notifications are small and provide a preview of the additional relevant content.

Current scope includes displaying all Worklist notifications.

Notification Details

The notifications component contains two types of popup notifications: transient popups and global popups. Both types of popups display notifications that come directly from the Business Process Management (BPM) Worklist application pages. Links within the popups provide shortcuts to the pages where users can find relevant content about the notifications. Any notifications without associated notification detail pages appear in plain text without links.

Design Overview

Notification popup design consists of these elements:

  • Notification icon buttons with associated unread notification counts: These icon buttons and counts appear in an Oracle Fusion application's global area, to the left of the global search component.
All notification popups appear to emerge from these notification icon buttons (see figure 1).
  • Transient popups (also known as toaster notifications): These modeless popups display any new notifications (up to five) available.
The system checks for new notifications every three minutes.
  • Global popups: These popups appear when you click a notification icon button in the global area and display a set of the five most recent notifications (read and unread).
  • Notifications window: This new browser window appears when you click the More Notifications (x Unread) link in either the transient or global popups.
This window displays a list of all notifications.
Note: This popup notifications channel is not designed for accessibility at this point. Users can access notification content using other notification channels, such as email and the Worklist application.

Notification Icon Buttons and the Unread Notification Count
Return to Top

A persistent affordance across Oracle Fusion applications is needed to provide users with access to the already triggered transient popup notifications. For this purpose, a notification icon button (in the shape of a bell) and a numeral (that indicates the number of unread notifications) reside in the global area of the Oracle Fusion UI Shell, to the left of the global search component. The notification counter appears in white (as shown in figure 1).

There are two types of notification icon buttons (see figure 2):

  • Neutral notification icon button: Appears when there are no unread notifications
  • Alert state notification icon button: Appears when there are unread notifications

The Transient Popup

Transient popups are also known as toaster notifications because they automatically display any new notifications that have just arrived and then disappear after five seconds. The modeless popups require no explicit user action to dismiss them (although users can click a Close button to dismiss the popups before they close automatically). These popups, which occupy only a portion of the page, do not interfere with the current user interaction on the page. The system checks for any new notifications every three minutes.

The More Notifications (x Unread) link at the bottom of a transient popup opens a new browser window that contains a complete list of all notifications.

If a global popup or an earlier transient popup is visible, then a new transient popup must not appear at the same time. Any new notifications must appear after the next check for notifications.

Once users sign in to Oracle Fusion applications, the notification component checks for any new notifications and displays those notifications that have arrived since the last set of notifications. Transient popups appear to emerge from the notification icon buttons in an Oracle Fusion application's global area (see figure 3).

Users can select the Disable Notification Popups check box at the footer of either the transient or global popups to disable the transient popups. Selecting the Disable Notification Popups check box disables the only transient popups; however, the global popups are still available by clicking the global notification icon button. Users can again enable the transient popups by deselecting the Disable Notification Popups check box in the footer of the global popup.

Figure 3. Examples of transient notification popups

The Global Popup

The global popup appears when users click a notification icon button in the global area. Like the transient popup, the global popup also emerges from the notification icon button. But while the transient popups automatically trigger and display those notifications that have just arrived, the global popups are triggered by users and display a set of the five most recent notifications (both read and unread). Users can click a More Notifications (x Unread) link at the bottom of the popup to open the Notifications window, which contains a complete list of all notifications.

In the global popup, any notification that is considered unread is accompanied by an unread icon (a blue dot). The transient popups do not include unread icons because all of the notifications in the transient popups are still unread.

If a global popup is open, and users click anywhere else on the page, then the global popup dismisses automatically. Users can also click the Close icon button to close the popup.

Transient Popup and Global Popup Components
Return to Top

Both the transient popup and global popup have four components (a title bar, the notification list, the individual notifications, and the footer bar).

The Title Bar
The title bar contains these elements and characteristics:

  • Title: Use the string "Recent Notifications" for both transient and global popup titles.
  • Close icon button: Click this icon button to close a popup.
This is the only way to close a transient popup before its five seconds of display time, after which the transient popup closes automatically. To dismiss a global popup, you can either click the Close icon button in the title bar or click anywhere else on the page. If users click the Close icon button on either of the transient or global popups, the notifications within that popup are considered read.
The Notification List
The notification list has these characteristics:
  • A maximum of five notifications can appear in any popup.
  • The transient popup displays only the latest batch of notifications that has come in, up to a maximum number of five (see figure 5).
Once the transient popup has displayed a latest batch of notifications, these notifications will not appear again in the transient popup, even if there are no new notifications after this batch.
  • If more than five notifications arrive at the same time, then the transient popup still displays only five notifications; the remaining notifications are added to the count that appears in the More notifications (x unread) link and can be viewed by clicking this link (see figure 5).
  • The global popup always displays the five most recent notifications (both read or unread).
If there are fewer than five unread notifications available (for example, let's say two unread notifications), the global popup will still display only five notifications: two unread notifications accompanied by unread icons (blue dots) and three read notifications (see figure 6). If there are more than five notifications available, users must click the More Notifications (x Unread) link to view all the notifications in a new browser window (see figure 6).
  • The notifications are listed in chronological order, showing the most recent notification first.
  • If there are no notifications, then the global popup reads "No notifications to display" (see figure 7).
Transient popups appear only when new notifications arrive.
Figure 5. Examples of transient popups with one and five new notifications respectively
Figure 6 Global popups
Figure 7. Global popup when there are no notifications to display

The Notification
The individual notifications have these elements and characteristics:

  • Title: The notification title text can include up to 80 characters.
If a title extends beyond this limit, the title is truncated and an ellipsis appears after the 80th character. If users hover over a notification, the entire title appears.
  • Timestamp: The time stamp format is based on user preference.
When users are signed in to an Oracle Fusion application, the transient popups appear at the same time that the notifications are received. Hence, displaying a time stamp in the transient popup is not required. The time stamp appears only in the global popup in a new line after the notification title.
Footer
The footer has these characteristics:
  • The wording of the More Notifications(x Unread) link remains consistent in both transient and global popups.
  • In both the transient and global popups, the number of notifications that appears in the More Notifications (x Unread) link represents the total number of unread notifications, excluding those that are listed in the popup (see figure 8).
  • The user can select the Disable Notification Popups check box at the footer of the transient or global popups to disable the transient popups.
Selecting the Disable Notification Popups check box disables only the transient popups. The global popups are still available by clicking the global notification icon button. The user can again enable the transient popups by deselecting the Disable Notification Popups check box in the footer of the global popup.

All Notifications Window
The Notifications window has these characteristics:
  • This window shows notification titles and timestamps for when the notifications were received.
  • This window displays 20 notifications initially; when users scroll to the bottom of the window, 20 more notifications appear.
This continues until all the notifications have been displayed.
  • In this window, the unread notifications are accompanied by unread (blue dot) icons. When users close the Notifications window, all the notifications in that window are considered read by the users, and the notification icon changes to the read state.
  • The column headers allow sorting by date (latest-to-oldest and vice versa), sorting by title (alphabetically A-Z and Z-A), and sorting by status (unread-to-read and vice versa). By default, the notifications are in chronological order, showing the most recent notification first.
  • This window enables users to filter the notifications by status of read and unread.
  • If users click a particular notification, the system displays the notification details in a new window. The Notifications window remains open in the background until users close it.

General Heuristic: Transient Popup
General heuristics of the transient popup:
  • The transient popup window is modeless and should not interfere with current page user interactions.
  • Only one transient popup must appear at a time.
  • Transient popups must automatically dismiss after five seconds.
  • Transient popups must remain in view when users hover over the popups.
  • If users hover over a transient popup or intentionally close the popup (by clicking the Close icon button), then the notifications within the popup are considered read.
  • If a transient or global popup is open when new notifications arrive, the new notifications appear in the next check for new notifications.
That is, the notification system does not automatically close the current popup in view to update it with the new notifications, nor does it immediately display the new notifications; instead, the new notifications appear after the next check for notifications.
  • If a transient popup is in view, and users click the notification icon button, then the transient popup automatically dismisses before showing the global popup.
  • Clicking an individual notification dismisses the transient popup and opens the notification details in a new browser window.
  • Clicking the More Notifications (x Unread) link dismisses the popup (this applies to both transient and global popups) and opens the Notifications window.
The Notifications window lists all notifications.

Read and Unread Notifications

Given the transient nature of notifications, users may miss a notification. The unread notification count is designed to help users keep track of and manage the notifications in the system.

The notifications have these characteristics:

  • In the global popup, the read notifications are not accompanied by any icons; the unread notifications are accompanied on the left by an icon (blue dot) (see figure 8).
  • When a transient popup dismisses automatically, the notifications presented in that popup are considered unread.
However, if a user clicks the Close icon button in the popup or hovers over the transient popup, the notifications in that popup are considered read.
  • If there are any notifications that are considered unread, the neutral state notification icon will toggle to show an alert notification icon button along the total number of unread notifications.
  • Once users click the notification icon button, the system displays a global popup that lists up to five of the most recent notifications (in the order that these notifications were received, with the last received notification on top).
Both read and unread notifications can appear within the global popup.
  • If a user clicks the Close icon button or clicks anywhere else on the page, the system assumes that the user has read all the displayed unread notifications, and the unread icons (blue dots) that appear in the global popup disappear from those notifications.
  • Once users click the More Notifications (x Unread) link from the global or the transient popup, the notification system assumes that all the unread notifications listed in the Notifications window have been read.

Time Limit for Considering Notifications as Unread
Return to Top

Notifications are considered unread for up to 14 days. Thereafter, the notifications are automatically marked as read.

Time Interval to Check for New Notifications
Return to Top

This notification component checks for new notifications every three minutes.

Time Limit for Storing Notifications

The notifications component permanently deletes notifications that are older than one month. Past notifications can be retrieved from their respective Worklist applications.

Unified Messaging Service User Preferences
Return to Top

Users can choose to opt out or opt in at any time from this popup notifications channel through the Worlklist application's user preferences. Users are opted in by default.

When a user opts out of the notification channel, the notification icon button still appears in the global area. When a user clicks this notification icon button, a global popup appears and reads "No notifications to display."
