Norway Post Improves Customer Service and Saves Major Annual Costs by Boosting Call-Center Productivity thanks to Accenture and Capgemini

Norway Post AS, founded in 1647, is the Norwegian postal service. The company, owned by the Norwegian Ministry of Transport and Communications, manages mail distribution throughout the country and has businesses in other parts of the Nordic region. In 2002, Norway Post changed its corporate structure to become a joint-stock company in preparation for Norwegian postal market deregulation.

Challenges

  • Streamline operations and reduce costs, including IT expenses for the company's five customer-service call centers in response to shrinking revenues, as the volume of mail has fallen 40% since 1999
  • Enable customer-service representatives to more efficiently and accurately help customers, including answering questions, tracking missing or delayed mail, and making compensation payments
  • Increase customer and employee satisfaction
  • Expand insight into customer behavior and preferences and use the information to improve service and product offerings
  • Create a solution that is easy to roll out to new organizations as Norway Post acquires additional companies.

Oracle solution

  • Implemented Oracle SOA Suite and Oracle WebLogic Suite to integrate the company’s cloud-based, Salesforce.com, customer-relationship management (CRM) system with its customer-service call centers' on-premise, back-end systems - such as those used to manage customer lists, addresses, financial and procurement systems, and a mail-tracking solution - so employees can access them from a single, user interface and deliver faster and more thorough assistance
  • Cut time needed to access customer and tracking information from back-office systems - improving customer and employee satisfaction
  • Saved major costs annually, thanks to improved call-center productivity
  • Achieved additional significant savings in time and effort and improved data quality by ensuring that information changes made in the integrated, back-end system are automatically synchronized in all other integrated systems, thanks to Oracle SOA Suite
  • Expanded customer insight through more efficient customer-service call centers, enabled by cloud integration - which improves services and increases customer satisfaction and the company’s profitability
  • Created a solution that makes it easy for companies that Norway Post acquires to implement - accelerating time to value
  • Eliminated previous skepticism toward integration between cloud computing and on-premise back-end systems to facilitate more benefits from this type of solution by using it in other parts of the organization

Event-Driven SOA part of Industrial SOA series

imgAbstract: If we consider real companies and their business transactions, we see that the real world is not really service-driven at all, but much more event-driven. A new customer is created in the system, a new car reservation is made, a vehicle is returned or needs to be taken to the shop. All of these "functions" can be supported by services, but often also by precisely defined process chains.

However, complex business processes can rarely be automated "in one piece," as the real exceptions and dependencies of diverse business processes are highly dynamic. That brings us to the point where the concept of "event" becomes useful in our architectures. In this article, we therefore want to shine light on event-driven architectures and tie them into our current argumentation chains in SOA.

Dealing with Business Events
Most companies now collect business-relevant information by aggregating available data. As a rule, this is in the domain of data warehouses which condense information a follow-up to preceding events. Here the focus is directly on the data and not on the process information, which is actually much more interesting. We miss out on the ability to process business information in near-realtime, which would allow the company management to react much more quickly to events as they occur. The discipline of business intelligence is developing rapidly in order to take this issue into account. In the following, we want to consider the underlying mechanisms, or the events which allow faster reactions to important changes. Read the complete article here.

Configure Auto-Recovery in Oracle SOA Suite by Danilo Schmiedel

Oracle SOA Suite 11g has some great features to recover faulted instances automatically. When a BPEL process flow errors out, it is retried with all its invocations. This is undesirable in some cases. For example if re-calling a composite results in duplicated data, data have been changed before the recovery is planned to be executed or you do not want to create too many composite instances in order to save the space in your SOAINFRA-schema. See below the different places where automatic recoveries are configured / disabled.

1) Change RecurringScheduleConfig (see also the screenshot below)

  • Right-click soa-infra (SOA_cluster_name)
  • Choose SOA Administration > BPEL Properties
  • Click "More BPEL Configuration Properties"
  • Click "Recovery Config"
  • Change values for RecurringScheduleConfig
    • maxMessageRaiseSize = 0
    • startWindowTime = 00:00
    • stopWindowTime = 00:00

Click Apply.

Podcast Show Notes: Old Habits Die Hard in the New SOA World By OTN ArchBeat

Like the previous series, the latest OTN ArchBeat Podcast program was also recorded in a hotel room just around the corner from Oracle OpenWorld in San Francisco just a few weeks ago. All experts, members of the OTN architect community agreed to participate in an informal roundtable discussion of what's happening in Service Oriented Architecture. As you'll hear, the conversation ranged from the maturity of Service Oriented Architecture technology and tools, to the the lingering and typically self-imposed problems that can prevent organizations from realizing the full potential of SOA, to what SOA means in the era of *aaS, mobile computing, and big data. You can listen the podcast here.

Book Review: Getting Started with Oracle SOA B2B Integration by Jon Petter Av Hjulstad

Before last OOW my only experience with Oracle B2B was Ronald van Luttikhuizen's presentation at OUGN this year. After some sessions at OOW, and reading this book on the plane back I now know more about it. Unfortunately I do not have any practical project experience yet.

I like this book - it gives a good summary of what B2B is and what the Oracle B2B product can do. Not all of you will come across B2B, but when you need it - then you really need it. B2B functionality is not something you would like to code yourself from scratch. I like that it is a "Hands-On Tutorial", so you can try it out using the virtual image of the Oracle SOA Suite patch release PS5 (11.1.1.6).

Here are the book details:

Using JPA in SCA Spring Beans by Dusan Chromy

When using  Oracle SOA Suite 11g SCA Spring Bean components you will likely be facing a decision about how to interact with your database from within the Spring Beans. The answer will ultimately depend on your overall system architecture. For instance you may wire a Spring Bean directly to a DB adapter, or you can encapsulate the data access inside a web service or an EJB session bean. In my last project we have decided to access the data directly from the Spring Beans, taking advantage of the flexibility provided by Spring's JDBC abstraction framework. In fact Spring makes JDBC access so simple that it is easy to miss other alternatives, one of them being especially noteworthy - the Java Persistence API.

Java Persistence API has greatly simplified the object-relational mapping in Java. Let's have a look at how JPA can be incorporated into an SCA application.

The Service
We will create a simple service inspired by my other passion, motorcycles. The service will provide these operations:

  • createBike - creates an entity for a motorcycle with the specified manufacturer and model name and returns the entity's ID.
  • getBikeDescription - retrieves the description of a motorcycle with the specified ID.

The Project
We start with an empty composite project and add a Spring Bean, following the code-first approach:

  • Create a Java interface for our SCA service: MotoService.java
  • Create a dummy implementation of the above interface MotoServiceImpl.java.
  • Create a Spring Context which uses the classes created in the above steps.
  • Wire the Spring Context to the Exposed Services lane - this step will generate MotoService.wsdl.

Connecting Clinical and Administrative Processes: Oracle SOA Suite for Healthcare Integration

SOA HealthcareOne of the biggest IT challenges facing today’s health care industry is the difficulty in finding reliable, secure, and cost-effective ways to exchange information. Buyers and providers need versatile platforms for enterprise-wide information sharing. Clinicians require accurate information to provide quality care to patients while administrators need integrated information for all facets of the business operation. Both sides of the organization must be able to access information from research and development systems, practice management systems, claims systems, financial systems, and many others. Externally, these organizations must share claims data, patient records, pharmaceutical data, lab reports, and diagnostic information among third party entities - all while complying with emerging standards for formatting, processing, and storing electronic health records (EHR).

Service-oriented architecture (SOA) enables developers to integrate many types of software applications, databases and computing platforms within a particular health network as well as with community, state, and national health information exchanges. The Oracle SOA Suite for healthcare integration is designed to provide healthcare organizations with comprehensive integration capabilities within a unified middleware platform, as well as with healthcare libraries and templates for streamlining healthcare IT projects. It reduces the need for specialized skills and enforces an enterprise-wide view of critical healthcare data.  Read the complete article here.

At our SOA Community Workspace (SOA Community membership required) the latest SOA Suite for healthcare presentation is available.

Cloud to On-Premise Connectivity Patterns By Rajesh Raheja

Do you have a requirement to convert an Opportunity in Salesforce.com to an Order/Quote in Oracle E-Business Suite? Or maybe you want the creation of an Oracle RightNow Incident to trigger an on-premise Oracle E-Business Suite Service Request creation for RMA and Field Scheduling? If so, read on.

In a previous blog post, I discussed integrating TO cloud applications, however the use cases above are the reverse i.e. receiving data FROM cloud applications (SaaS) TO on-premise applications/databases that sit behind a firewall. Oracle SOA Suite is assumed to be on-premise with with Oracle Service Bus as the mediation and virtualization layer. The main considerations for the patterns are are security i.e. shielding enterprise resources; and scalability i.e. minimizing firewall latency. Let me use an analogy to help visualize the patterns: the on-premise system is your home - with your most valuable possessions - and the SaaS app is your favorite on-line store which regularly ships (inbound calls) various types of parcels/items (message types/service operations). You need the items at home (on-premise) but want to safe guard against misguided elements of society (internet threats) who may masquerade as postal workers and vandalize property (denial of service?). Let's look at the patterns. Read the complete article here.

Internet of Things - The Oracle platform by Torsten Winterberg

IoT will be the next game changer. We’re entering a world, where Billions of devices will be able to play in role in higher level processes. There will be many more machines using our todays internet than humans will do. This is a summary of an Openworld session on Oracle IoT strategy.

IoT Definition from Wikipedia:
Equipping all objects in the world with minuscule identifying devices could be transformative of daily life. For instance, business may no longer run out of stock or generate waste products, as involved parties would know which products are required and consumed. One's ability to interact with objects could be altered remotely based on immediate or present needs, in accordance with existing  end-user agreements.

Some major challenges have to be addressed:

  • Complex value chain
  • Lack of standardization to build, deploy & manage IoT applications
  • No consistency in managing security of data and identity of devices
  • Need to analyze Fast data in real time
  • No integration platform to convert data into business automation

Oracle launched their Iot platform at Openworld 2013 with this focus:

  • Standardize application development for devices, enterprise, web and mobile apps
  • Analyze IoT data to achieve real-time visibility
  • Integrate IoT data with enterprise applications & cloud infrastructure
  • Secure data & identity across devices and enterprise data center

9 Tips for Organizational Maturity in SOA by Luis Weir

One of the greatest challenges to implementing SOA has in fact nothing to do with the intrinsic complexity behind a SOA technology platform. It is widely recognized that the real difficulty lies in dealing with people and processes from different parts of business and aligning them to deliver enterprise wide solutions. This is not only true in the case of SOA architectures but rather a challenge faced in systems design in general. As it has been nicely put by Conway’s law: “organizations which design systems ... are constrained to produce designs which are copies of the communication structures of these organizations”.

Following 9 tips that have helped me bridge organizational silos by improving communications and collaboration between teams/departments and also by providing visibility over available assets:

Scripted SOA Diagnostic Dumps for PS6 (11.1.1.7) By ShawnBailey

When you upgrade to SOA Suite PS6 (11.1.1.7) you acquire a new set of Diagnostic Dumps in addition to what was available in PS5. With more than a dozen to choose from and not wanting to run them one at a time, this blog post provides a sample script to collect them all quickly and hopefully easily. There are several ways that this collection could be scripted and this is just one example.

What is Included:

  • wlst.properties: Ant Properties
  • build.xml
  • soa_diagnostic_script.py: Python Script

Monitoring large flow traces with Oracle SOA Suite by Martin Günther

End-to-end monitoring of BPEL process instances acro ss composite borders is a great feature of Oracle SOA/Business Process Management Suite 11g. It is shown in nearly every PreSales presentation and when you were used to know SOA Suite 10g or to work with other kinds of distributed, heterogenous systems it is a real improvement.

But when you implement large process chains you might realize that the newly won process transparency can raise new challenges. Imagine you have a root process which creates several instances of sub-processes. In such a case without doing any extra work you will get one flow trace for the process and all of its sub-process instances. For large process chains you need to consider the following facts:

  • Transparency: Although it shows an end-to-end view of the whole execution tree, trying to find a faulted sub-process might be a real challenge. It doesn’t matter if you start the search from the root process instance or from one of the sub-processes - the flow trace always displays all components of the execution context. When you click on a sub-process and you go back to the flow trace you might have to expand all child nodes again and again.
  • DataSetTooLargeException:  When your flow trace becomes longer and longer, you will observe, that there is a maximum size for the audit trail that can be displayed by Enterprise Manager. Usually it results in a java.lang.RuntimeException: oracle.soa.management.facade.DataSetTooLargeException: Requested audit trail size is larger than threshold … chars
For large execution trees, sub-process instances might not be displayed or you might not be able to see things in detail.
  • Low Memory: It is not only the visible representation of your instance, which struggles. A huge audit trail implicitly means that your needed memory allocation for executing your process instance grows. It can grow to this extent that your process instance crashes because of running low in memory.

Purging Improving Performance via Parallelism in Oracle Event Processing Pipelines with High-Availability by Mauricio Arango

This posting explains how to use parallelism to improve performance of Oracle Event Processing (OEP) applications with active-active high-availability (HA) deployments. Parallelism is exploited for performance gain in each one of the server instances of an HA configuration. This is achieved by identifying sections of an application’s processing pipeline that can operate in parallel, and, therefore, can be mapped to separate processing threads. Both pipeline and independent query parallelism are described.

Pipeline Parallelism

A pipeline architecture has inherent concurrency because each of its stages works in parallel on different data elements flowing through it. For example, in the pipeline in figure 1, if each stage is assigned its own processing thread, the following actions can occur in concurrently: input JMS adapter reads event #3 from a JMS topic, CQL query processor handles event #2, and output JMS adapter writes event #1 to a queue.

Figure 1. OEP Pipeline with three concurrent stages

figure1

Although OEP HA pipelines are limited to one thread per stage, significant performance gains can be achieved by running each stage in a separate thread as compared to running all stages on one thread or in a number of threads smaller than the number of pipeline stages.

A key constraint in OEP when using active-active HA (see Oracle Fusion Middleware Developer’s Guide for Oracle Event Processing 11g Release 1 (11.1.1.7) for Eclipse, section 24) is that it requires the input streams to both the primary and the secondary instances to be identical and to maintain the same event ordering as events flow through the OEP Event Processing Network (EPN). This constrain limits the EPN topology to be either a linear pipeline, starting from an input adapter and ending with an output adapter, or a tree where, each node with downstream branching replicates every event to each of its branches.

The event ordering requirement also limits to one the number of threads assigned to each stage of the EPN. Having more than one thread in one stage, for example, in an input JMS adapter, would fail to assure that the order of events entering the following stage, such as input channel, is the same in both the primary and secondary instances. KPI Risk Assessment at bpmNext2013 - Manoj Das, Oracle

In many scenarios, such as in Call Center, business users want to be alerted if a KPI threshold has not yet been violated but is at risk because the KPI has been trending up. Oracle Business Process Management’s BAM Composer allows non-technical business users to create temporal BAM queries including trending measures. Through simple point-click selection in a browser window, BAM Composer automatically generates the complex CQL statement implementing the business query. It also supports creation of mashups combining strategic BI data with operational BAM data and external sources. - read more here.

Code Coverage for BPMN by Mark Foster

Introduction

I visited a customer recently who asked a very interesting question…. they’d been performing a series of stress tests of their Business Process Management project made up of many & complex Business Process Management processes and they wanted to know if there were any activities/paths in any of their processes which they hadn’t traversed… sort of like “Clover” for Business Process Management, This led me to thinking about Business Process Management auditing and cross-referencing this with the Business Process Management activities.

BPMN Code Coverage: The Theory

Let us take a look at the relevant tables in the SOAINFRA schema….

BPM_AUDIT_QUERY

Providing that the audit level has been set sufficiently high (for example “Production” would do), this table stores details of all BPMN activities instantiated at any given time.

BPM_CUBE_ACTIVITY & BPM_CUBE_PROCESS

These tables are a static view of all activities in all deployed process at any given time.

Deployed Business Process Management activities not in BPM_AUDIT_QUERY

It became obvious that selecting all activities in the join of BPM_CUBE_ACTIVITY and BPM_CUBE_PROCESS for a given deployed process/composite which did not exist in BPM_AUDIT_QUERY during a given time period would highlight activities not invoked as part of out testing. As a result I ended up with a piece of SQL thus….

…i.e. which activities in processes “BpmClover” and “BpmCallable” were not traversed in the last 24 hours.

BPMN Code Coverage: The Practice

I needed a fairly simple process to test with, not too complex but with a good selection of activities, human tasks, boundary events, gateways etc… and ended up with the following (not BPMN best practices by any means)….
…i.e. a main process and a callable sub-process. Read the complete article here.

Sharing Fault Policies Across Your Oracle Business Process Management 11g Projects by Jaideep Ganguli

Deselect Include ManifestThis post is specifically about how to maintain and share enterprise level Fault Policies that can be re-used across all your Business Process Management 11g projects. I’m assuming that you know enough about Business Process Management/SOA Suite Exception Handling in general  using Fault Policies. If you are looking for more basic information on Fault Handling,  check Using Fault Handling In A BPEL Process  in the SOA Suite Developer’s Guide.

If you read the SOA Suite Developer’s Guide, it is clear that the best strategy is to maintain your Fault Policy and Fault Binding files in MDS and refer to them from all of your SOA/Business Process Management projects.

Here’s a snippet that shows how to refer to Fault Policies shared via MDS in your composite.xml

Adaptive Case Management: Delivering Right Customer Experience free online training

Customers today demand an experience that is both contextual and personalized. They do not want to be forced to follow a one-size-fits-all process and instead expect processes to adapt to their needs. This video, hosted by Integration Developer News at Business Process Management-CON, describes the challenges that rigid or structured processes present, introduces Adaptive Case Management (ACM) to address those challenges, and describes how Oracle Business Process Management Adaptive Case Management empowers knowledge workers to progress through unstructured and unpredictable processes to meet the needs of the current situation, or case. Attend the online training here.

Adaptive Case Management Quick Start Series

This series of videos introduces Adaptive Case Management in Oracle Business Process Management 11g. Attend the free on-demand training here.

Overview of Adaptive Case Management
Oracle Business Process Management 11g Adaptive Case Management enables you to measure and manage unstructured processes the way you have been managing your more structured business processes. This video, the first in the series, describes what Adaptive Case Management is and compares it to conventional business process management . It also describes the types of processes that benefit from Adaptive Case Management.

Participating in a Case
Oracle Business Process Management 11g Adaptive Case Management enables you to measure and manage unstructured processes the way you have been managing your more structured business processes. In this video, the third in the series, you learn what it is like to participate in a case.

Anatomy of a Case Management Project
Oracle Business Process Management 11g Adaptive Case Management enables you to measure and manage unstructured processes the way you have been managing your more structured business processes. This video, the second in the series, describes the components of a case in Oracle Business Process Management 11g, demystifying how Oracle Business Process Management is able to support knowledge workers who participate in unstructured processes.

Adaptive Case Management series – an overview – part 1 & 2 by Roger Goossens

This blogpost will be a part of a series, containing the English translation of 2 Whitebooks originally written in Dutch. Because Whitehorses believes ACM to become a very important feature in Oracle Fusion Middleware, it was decided to translate these Whitebooks into a series of blogposts. Enjoy!
With the arrival of patchset 6 of the Oracle Fusion Middleware (FMW) 11g Release Oracle introduces a new and important feature: Adaptive Case Management (ACM). ACM makes it easier to implement highly flexible business processes in a FMW environment. Information on ACM is still scarce. It is expected that in the next major FMW release ACM will be improved upon and that it will become as important a member of FMW as Business Process Management and BPEL.

The centerpiece of ACM is the case itself. The first series (called ACM – an overview) will focus on the most important components of a case and it’s lifecycle. The common theme of this whitebook used to explain ACM, is a fictional case based on the Dutch law called WABO (to be explained later on). The theme is used in the examples and demos to better explain the concept.

SOA, Empowerment and Continuous Improvement by Rick Beers

#1) User experience and the Oracle Applications Cloud: IDC Analyst Mike Fauscette writes about “Oracle and the Cloud” in a recent post on the Seeking Alpha website, a resource for investment information. In his article, Fauscette writes: “In particular, there are new tools and a simplified experience for all the cloud apps that extends to some new mobile and analytic apps.”

#2) PeopleSoft User Experience Guidelines now available: The PeopleSoft Applications User Experience team has announced the release of the PeopleSoft User Experience (UX) Guidelines. The PeopleSoft UX Guidelines contain information about the usage of key PeopleSoft components to create highly usable, efficient, and productive experiences for Oracle customers. Read more about the guidelines and how to use them on the Usable Apps blog.

#3) UX Direct gets a new look: Check the UX Direct blog to find out what’s new with UX Direct and to see how the site that provides user experience guidance has changed.

#4) Usability for developers: Oracle ACE Ahmed Aboulnaga of Raastech writes about usability and Oracle’s investment in user experience in the most recent digital edition of Oracle Scene from the UK Oracle User Group. “Usability – Ignored by Developers and Undervalued by Managers” is geared toward a developer audience, but hits a design audience with equal force. (Be patient -- this link takes a bit.)

#5) Oracle Applications User Experience team at Sangam 13:  Read about our plans and presentations at Sangam 13 in Hyderabad, India on the Voice of User Experience, or VoX, blog.
