Business challenges

Fastweb is an Italian telecommunications company that began as a startup that built its own fiber network. By implementing the internet protocol on its home-grown optical fiber network, Fastweb provided a triple offer of landline, internet, and television services, available simultaneously on a single connection for residential and business clients.

In 2008, Fastweb also became a Mobile Virtual Network Operator and launched its mobile voice and data service (Quadruple Play). By moving into the 5G era, Fastweb required support in controlling its fixed and mobile network traffic. The company also needed to quickly update existing policies and rules, without having to rewrite them.

Why Fastweb Chose Oracle

Oracle Communications Session Border Controller (SBC) supports Fastweb’s core architecture to handle the enormous data traffic that comes with the migration from 4G to 5G. Oracle Communications Policy Charging Rule Function (PCRF) helps Fastweb rapidly and securely deploy new policies that support different use cases.

The company selected Oracle Communications PCRF and SBC because of Oracle’s proven, highly scalable, reliable, and flexible features. Oracle allows Fastweb to rapidly update any existing policy and deploy new features and products.

Oracle Communications PCRF and SBC were also selected for their market-leading technology, allowing Fastweb to adapt the technology to their individual network requirements. The company also found Oracle Communications to be priced competitively, alongside outstanding product reliability.

Results

The implementation time for Oracle Communications PCRF and SBC is traditionally measurable in a few weeks, which offers Fastweb the flexibility to adapt to new market or customer needs in a very timely manner. The service implementation is generally less than six months. Customizations are quick and easy, enabling the telco to react more quickly to their users’ requirements and improve their market share.

Additionally, Oracle PCRF and SBCs are fully virtualized and strongly scalable, meaning that they help Fastweb build up agile network infrastructures, making services quickly deployable.

Developed in compliance with all international standards, Oracle PCRF and SBC can be easily integrated within the rest of the customer core network infrastructure.
