Q: I get a warning that my Oracle XE (Express Edition) database is too old.

That warning is only relevant for production (or serious) environments. For testing and evaluation, you can ignore that warning; Oracle XE 10.2.0.1.0 will work fine.

Q: Can I run SOA Suite in JDeveloper's integrated WebLogic Server?

That ability will be available in a subsequent release of SOA Suite. But in SOA Suite 11gR1, you must install SOA Suite into a remote WebLogic Server instance.

Q: I get error ORA-00018: maximum number of sessions exceeded (Oracle XE running out of processes)

(This issue can also manifest itself with misleading " TNS Name not found" messages.)

Oracle XE's default configuration does not have enough processes and sessions for Oracle SOA Suite. Make sure your processes parameter is >= 200. Follow these steps using SQL*Plus, substituting your sys password, you only ever need to do this once:

sqlplus sys/system@xe as sysdba
SQL> show parameter session
SQL> show parameter processes
SQL> alter system reset sessions scope=spfile sid='*';
SQL>alter system set processes=200 scope=spfile;
SQL> shutdown immediate
SQL> startup
SQL> show parameter session
SQL> show parameter processes

Q: Why don't I see SOA, BPEL, Human Workflow, Rules, BAM or other SOA components in JDeveloper?

By default, JDeveloper does not have any of the SOA components installed. You need to install the SOA Extension using the JDeveloper Update Center. The official steps are in the JDeveloper Installation Guide, but the steps specifically for the SOA Extension are here:

From the JDeveloper menu choose Help > Check for Updates. In the Update Wizard, select Search Update Centers and ensure Oracle Fusion Middleware Products is checked ( screenshot). Then ensure that Oracle SOA Composite Editor is checked ( screenshot, your version may not match the screenshot exactly). The SOA Extension is approximately 230 MB.
