File Storage

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) File Storage is a fully managed elastic file system built for the cloud that enables customers to migrate their enterprise workloads to the cloud. Every file system scales automatically to accommodate the growth of up to 8 exabytes. File Storage eliminates the need to provision capacity in advance, so customers pay only for the capacity they need. File Storage also offers asynchronous replication, snapshot, and clone capabilities to simplify business continuity for enterprise applications.

Oracle’s modern take on storage makes the cloud more flexible and affordable than ever.

OCI File Storage product features

Enterprise file storage

OCI File Storage is an enterprise-grade fully managed service and easily accommodates growing application storage needs. File Storage handles capacity management, software upgrades, security and disk failure, freeing IT managers to focus on business and application needs. OCI File Storage is NFSv3-compliant and can be accessed through VCN peering, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure FastConnect, or virtual private network (VPN). File Storage ensures business continuity with snapshot and clone capabilities and offers comprehensive features for lift and shift of enterprise applications.

Highly available and durable

OCI File Storage employs 5-way replicated storage, located in different fault domains, to provide redundancy for resilient data protection. Customer data is replicated for durability within each availability domain in a highly available infrastructure that implements industry-leading data protection techniques and best practices and is backed by SLA.

Disaster recovery and business continuity

Cross-region asynchronous replication

Cross-region asynchronous replication provides additional options for disaster recovery preparedness by allowing you to create crash-consistent replicas of your file systems. You can replicate the source file system to multiple targets at a replication interval that meets your business needs. This flexibility allows you to configure the feature to your specific use case. Example use cases include the following:

  • Geographically dispersed disaster recovery
  • Information lifecycle management and compliance
  • Data migration
  • General data movement—copy and backup

You pay only for the additional storage and the egress network data transfer cost to update the replicated file systems. For more information see the File Storage replication documentation.

Snapshots

Snapshots provide a consistent, point-in-time view of your file system. You can take as many snapshots as you need, and you pay only for the storage used by your data and metadata, including the storage capacity used by snapshots. Each snapshot reflects only data that has changed since the previous snapshot. The snapshot lifecycle can be fully automated using policy-based snapshots to meet your compliance requirements. For more information, see Managing Snapshots.

Clones

A clone is a new file system that is created based on a snapshot of an existing file system. You can turn any snapshot into an independent live file system instantaneously and access it for reading and writing immediately.

Security built-in

OCI File Storage encrypts all stored file system and snapshot data at rest by default, using the AES-256 encryption algorithm. By default, all file systems are encrypted using Oracle-managed encryption keys. Customers have the option to encrypt file systems using keys that they own and manage using Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Vault. Kerberos and Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) integration with File Storage can be used for stronger authentication and centralized management of users and groups. Additionally, File Storage provides the option for configuring encryption in transit for all data and metadata.

POSIX and NFS ready

OCI File Storage is Portable Operating System Interface (POSIX)-compliant to maximize application compatibility between different operating systems. Easily attach OCI File Storage to any existing network that supports network file system version 3.0 (NFSv3) to enable use cases including big data analytics, digital asset management, compliance management, backup, and more.

Compliance and certifications

File Storage reduces the administrative workload of compliance management with third-party audits and certifications available for both regions and specific countries. The Compliance Documents Service lets users view and download compliance documents as needed, on a self-service basis so that support requests are avoided.

Competitive pricing

Customers save 40% or more in some geographies relative to competitors. For example, Amazon EFS standard storage in Sao Paolo Brazil is priced at 47% more per GB ($0.57 per GB/mo.) than OCI File Storage ($0.30 per GB/mo.).

File Storage use cases

  • Concurrent read and write operations

File Storage ensures consistent file systems for concurrent read and write operations by multiple clients.

  • Higher availability and durability

File Storage provides higher availability and durability for customers who need a fully managed service to handle a single point of failure.

  • Parallel workloads

File Storage performs best with parallelized workloads and when running bulk operations.

  • Scale out access and capacity

File Storage is best suited for applications that require scale-out access and capacity.

Authentication and authorization for OCI File Storage with Kerberos and LDAP

Aboo Valappil, Technical Product Manager, OCI, and Prashant Jagannathan, Principal Product Manager, OCI

Organizations that use Kerberos and Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) for identity management often want to integrate their storage systems for secure centralized authentication and authorization. OCI File Storage can be integrated with Kerberos and LDAP to secure your File Storage-based NFS shares.
