The 2024 Java Virtual Machine Language Summit |
Santa Clara, California, August 2024 |
|
A Personal Look Inside the Java VM Language Summit |
By Chad Arimura, VP, Java Developer Relations |
|
The JVM Language Summit is "an open technical collaboration among language designers, compiler writers, tool builders, runtime engineers, and VM architects."
This was my third JVMLS, and it continues to be one of the most technical, forward-thinking conferences I attend. While most conferences focus on innovations already released, JVMLS is more of an exploration into what might come.

|
I first attended in 2019, and it's been extremely exciting to watch projects like Loom and Panama go from "exploration" to delivered, with this year focused on Valhalla (getting closer!), Leyden, Babylon, Lilliput, some updates on ZGC, JRuby, and more.
The no-frills aspect is also a feature. There isn't a lot to get in the way of enjoying the talks and networking with speakers and attendees. This puts a lot of emphasis on discussion, problem solving, and thinking about what comes next.
If you are a Java developer and want to be at the top of your game, don't miss the videos being posted to the Java YouTube channel, and consider attending next year's JVMLS. That said, don't want to wait until next August? Join us in March for JavaOne, the premiere Java conference where we want interaction, discussion, networking, and high-signal talks to be the focus. |
