Team Spotlight: Amit Zavery, Vice President, Product Management

Amit Zavery This is the first in a new series of articles designed to introduce some of the great minds behind Oracle Fusion Middleware. For the first interview, we sat down with Amit Zavery, vice president of product management for Oracle Fusion Middleware.

Q. Tell us about the professional journey that brought you to your current role.
A. Oracle recruited me from Carnegie Mellon University, where I was finishing a master’s degree focusing on high-speed networking. That background brought me to Oracle’s video server/interactive TV division as a software engineer. The video server technology eventually morphed into internet applications, and became the basis for Oracle E-Business Suite applications. I joined the Oracle Fusion Middleware team as a product manager 10 years ago and now lead the product management team.

Q. What energizes you most about your position?
A. I love to see how Oracle Fusion Middleware helps people in real life. It’s so satisfying to meet customers who use Oracle Fusion Middleware as a core business platform and get a tangible sense of how they benefit from the products our team builds.

Q. If you could only choose five words to characterize the value of Oracle Fusion Middleware, what would they be?
A. The first couple are easy: complete, because there is real value in using a complete and integrated solution instead of integrating multiple disparate systems. I also choose the word modern, because middleware has evolved significantly in recent years. And I’m going to cheat a bit and combine my last three words into a self-explanatory phrase: open application platform. But don’t take only my word for it—there’s an excellent podcast available that features comments from Oracle Fusions Middleware customers.

Q. Oracle is always busy with strategic product news. Are there any announcements to which you would particularly like to draw attention?
A. Well, hopefully our readers heard about our major new releases for Oracle Identity and Access Management 11g R2, and Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud 2.0, but we also recently announced Oracle Tuxedo 12c, the latest edition of the industry's #1 application server for conventional and cloud-based C/C++/COBOL applications.

Oracle Tuxedo 12c provides mainframe-class scalability and performance for mission-critical enterprise applications. It delivers innovative features, development tools, and product enhancements to help lower the total cost of ownership for new and rehosted applications and reduce time to market for new application development. And of course, it’s optimized to run on Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud and tightly integrated with Oracle Fusion Middleware, Oracle Database 11g, and Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c. I encourage everyone to take a look.

Q. Oracle Open World 2012 is coming up, which always means some exciting content and discussion. What can we expect to hear from your team?
A. You are going to hear some pretty fascinating discussions and stories of business innovation in a number of areas, including cloud, mobile, social, big data, and engineered systems. And you’ll hear some pretty exciting, beneficial plans and roadmaps for each of the products in the Oracle Fusion Middleware product family.

Q. What is a little-known fact about you that nobody would guess when first meeting you?
A. I love to spin music for fun—in fact, I am the designated DJ for all of our friends’ and family parties.

Q. What keeps you up at night?
A. I like to brainstorm ideas on continuing the innovation in the middleware space, and, not coincidentally, how to maintain the #1 market position.

Q. What free-time activities and interests do you enjoy?
A. I don’t do anything so extreme as to paint my face with team colors, but I am an inveterate sports follower. I’m also an avid movie buff.
