Japan’s leading financial institution uses Oracle Cloud Infrastructure services to streamline database management, strengthen security, and optimize costs while keeping existing applications unchanged
AI World Tour, Tokyo —April 16, 2026
Oracle today announced that Mizuho Bank, Ltd., one of Japan’s leading global financial institutions, has selected Oracle Autonomous AI Database on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) to modernize its IT infrastructure. By migrating to Oracle Autonomous AI Database, while maintaining its existing application environment, Mizuho Bank has reduced operational overhead, optimized costs, and strengthened security.
Founded in 2002, Mizuho Bank is one of Japan’s largest banks, providing a wide range of banking and financial services, and runs roughly 50 applications, including information and market systems, excluding core banking and settlement systems, on a shared platform of 20 databases. As demand continued to rise and platform operations became more complex, routine patching, maintenance, and recurring hardware refresh cycles increased operation overhead and capital investment. By selecting Oracle Autonomous AI Database on OCI, Mizuho Bank will be able to strengthen protection across systems and reduce the burden on day-to-day operations by automating critical database management and security tasks. This will free up IT teams to focus on higher-value initiatives that improve service delivery and business agility.
“By selecting Oracle Autonomous AI Database on OCI, we are cutting operational overhead and optimizing costs by improving the efficiency of database management,” said Shogo Morishige, vice president, B-Sphere Platform Team, Platform Engineering IT Department, Mizuho Bank, Ltd. “Looking ahead, we plan to strengthen disaster recovery, expand multicloud integration, and advance modernization with AI. These initiatives will help us build a more agile, resilient, and sustainable IT foundation while continuing to deliver high-quality financial services to our customers.”
With Oracle Autonomous AI Database, Mizuho Bank can scale efficiently while optimizing costs over time with a flexible, “start small” consumption model. Modeled scenarios show potential database license reduction of approximately 66 percent. At the same time, automated operations and advanced backup capabilities have strengthened security, including enhanced ransomware protection, while maintaining high system reliability.
Mizuho Bank is also using OCI managed services including OCI Database Management, OCI Monitoring, and Oracle Data Safe for monitoring, backup, auditing, and security controls. As a result, it has reduced operational complexity and eliminated much of the manual work required in on-premises environments. Automated patching in Oracle Autonomous AI Database strengthens resiliency and improves operational efficiency by helping keep systems continuously updated with the latest security and performance improvements. To help maintain stable and consistent operations as changes are introduced, Mizuho Bank uses Oracle Real Application Testing and Auto SQL Plan Management to validate updates in advance.
Mizuho Bank, Ltd. is one of Japan’s leading financial institutions and a core banking subsidiary of Mizuho Financial Group, Inc. The bank provides a wide range of financial services, including corporate banking, retail banking, and global transaction services, supporting customers in Japan and around the world. With a strong focus on digital transformation and innovation, Mizuho Bank continues to enhance its financial services and strengthen its global operations.
