By replacing EMC’s LTO tape drives with Oracle Database Backup Cloud Service, we have shortened our backup time by 3x, restored critical data 8x faster, and reduced operating expense. It also enabled us minimize risk, gain 24/7 access to backups via internet, and support expansion to other applications.
Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd. (Tata Power-DDL), a subsidiary of Tata Group, provides electricity to 7 million consumers in Delhi’s North and Northwest. The utility also transformed its power distribution business by implementing high-tech automated systems—including remote grid and outage management systems.
Tata Power-DDL used to store a large volume of consumer data on EMC’s LTO tape drives and then ship the tapes to an offsite location via a courier agency. It was time consuming and costly to transport tapes from one location to another and involved risk of data breach. To meet regulatory requirements and mitigate risk, Tata Power-DDL needed to adopt a disaster recovery solution that shortened its database backup and restoration time and reduced operating expenditure (OpEx).
We adopted Oracle Database Backup Cloud Service because of its superior encryption and compression capabilities—features that vendors like Amazon, Nextra, and Rackspace could not offer. The solution also provided the unlimited scalability and high level of integration our business required.
After conducting a proof of concept and analysis of backup requirements, such as database size, internet speed, and restoration time, Tata Power-DDL completed the configuration for Oracle Database Backup Cloud Service in less than 4 days and went live with the new platform in just 15 days.
“Oracle Database Backup Cloud Service is so convenient, easy, and quick to implement. It also fits well into our overall cloud strategy,” Taneja said.
