Executive Overview

Oracle SQL Developer is both a graphical user interface and a PL/SQL interactive development environment for Oracle Database, as well as a migration platform for moving non-Oracle databases and applications to Oracle. Oracle SQL Developer includes features that make it easy to browse and administer Oracle Database objects, write, execute and tune SQL, generate reports, export and import objects and data, and administer the database. Oracle SQL Developer also includes a fully-functional database modeling solution via Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler, which runs as an extension in Oracle SQL Developer.

Oracle Product Strategy

Oracle SQL Developer, along with Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler, is provided to all users of Oracle Database at no additional cost. Customers are empowered to decrease their total cost of investment, by  being able to design, build, maintain, and administer their applications and databases on Day One of their relationship with Oracle Database. Oracle SQL Developer is included with each version of Oracle Database as a standard database component. More than 3,500,000 users are able take advantage of new Oracle Database features including Oracle Multitenant, Oracle Data Redaction, and new SQL and PL/SQL language enhancements introduced in Oracle Database 12c.

Oracle SQL Developer 4.1
Oracle SQL Developer will continue to introduce support for and enhance the user experience with new Oracle Database features. In addition, existing SQL Developer features will continue to be enhanced as well as new features will be developed based on the feedback of our large and active user community. To date, Oracle SQL Developer has implemented 700 user-submitted ideas on our SQL Developer Exchange.
Version 4.1 will focus on the following areas –

  • Database administration features, specifically database performance and status diagnostics
  • SQL*Plus command compatibility and a similar interactive experience
  • Additional Command Line Interface supported features
  • Immediate visualization of table relationships via relational diagrams
  • Streamlining the process to migrate from 3rd party DBMS to Oracle Database

Future Investment
As a key component for every Oracle Database user, Oracle intends to continue enhancing Oracle SQL Developer. Oracle SQL Developer will continue to be included with versions of the Oracle Database as a standard component and as a separate download on the Oracle Technology Network (OTN).

Oracle’s Support Policy

Oracle SQL Developer is included with the license of your Oracle Database. Customers with valid Oracle Database Support contracts are able to submit Service Requests with My Oracle Support.
Oracle SQL Developer has an extremely large and active installed base, and enjoys a consistently high ranking of downloaded resources from OTN. Oracle recognizes both the considerable investment in Oracle SQL Developer and the cost savings it represents by and for our customers, and remains committed to the long-term support of this product.
