Use these hands-on labs developed by Brian Leonard and Pavel Anni to evaluate and become familiar with the operation of several Oracle Solaris technologies.  More will be added over time.

Lab 1 - Install Oracle Solaris on Oracle VM VirtualBox

This lab is a prerequisite to the upcoming labs.  It installs an Oracle Solaris 11 virtual machine for Oracle VM VirtualBox on your system. Instructions and prerequisites are provided for Windows, MacOS, Solaris, and Linux.

Lab 2 - Introduction to the Oracle Solaris ZFS File System

A hands-on tutorial on the basics of Oracle Solaris ZFS.  This lab describes how devices are used in storage pools, including performance and availability implications. It also looks at the various types of Oracle Solaris ZFS datasets you can create and when to use each type. You will learn about file system snapshots, cloning data, allocation limits, and recovering from common errors.  Includes demonstrations of advanced concepts such as hybrid storage pools.

Lab 3 - Protecting Your Applications With Oracle Solaris Security

How to use role-based access controls (RBAC) and assign privileges to both users and processes.  Also, how to use the Service Management Facility to give non-privilege aware processes the correct level of privileges.  Great background material, too!

Lab 4 - Combining Virtual OS, Network, and Storage in Oracle Solaris 11

How to  create and configure a VNIC (Virtual Network Interface Card).  How to create, configure, and install a Solaris zone in its own ZFS file system, and assign it a virtual network interface.  Connect the zone to the Internet so you can clone it, then manage its bandwidth so that it does not clog network traffic for other zones.  Now delegate administration.  A very cool lab that shows you how to combine multiple virtualization features of Solaris with real-world benefits.

Lab 5 - Introduction to Image Packaging System for Developers

How to use Image Packaging System (IPS): search and install packages, configure IPS, create your own local repository. How to convert your application into Solaris 11 package, publish and install it from your package repository. Highly recommended for software developers and system administrators who will deploy Solaris 11 systems behind a firewall.
