CPI Migrates from Microsoft to Oracle with help from PTS
Migrating your applications to the Oracle platform may seem like a daunting task, but Oracle's Product Technology Services (PTS) team is able to provide expert assistance and ensure migration projects run smoothly. By leveraging the resources offered by Oracle PTS, ISVs can make their applications available to the ever increasing number of customers who are demanding solutions based on Oracle technology.
Spanish ISV Central de Procesos Informáticos (CPI) is currently working closely with Oracle to migrate its GDocs document management application to Oracle Database 10g and Application Server 10g.
Designed to help companies comply with Spanish data protection legislation (known locally as LOPD), GDocs was originally written in Visual Basic and used MS SQL Server, but this client-server environment proved too limiting for the application to be adopted by large, dynamic organisations. The decision was made to migrate to Oracle and working in collaboration with Oracle's PTS division alongside the local Oracle ISV relationship team CPI has been able to make excellent progress towards completing the project.
After sending four of its team members to a PTS Migration Workshop in March, CPI was able to complete the initial migration from SQL Server to Oracle Database 10g in the first week of May. Although the software is still operating in a client server architecture, the company expects to complete the full migration to Application Server 10g and roll out the application to customers by the end of October 2005. CPI already has customers waiting for the migration project to be completed, as they are keen to take up GDocs just as soon as they can run it in an Oracle Application Server environment.
Carlos Martín, CPI's CIO in Madrid, commented about the migration process for GDocs to Oracle: "GDocs was actually developed using an MS SQL database and Visual Basic, within a client-server environment, which did not allow work to be done in the kind of dynamic open organizations that exist today. CPI planned the migration so that the application would be accessible from the internet and all of the people within the company could make changes and continue developing in the LOPD environment within the company."
The support provided by PTS in this case has been instrumental in the smooth progress of CPI's migration. In addition to the migration workshop, in April PTS provided a one to one briefing session with CPI to offer practical advice on the project.
PTS provides ISVs with a wide range of resources and support to assist with the quick and seamless migration to the Oracle platform. Migration workshops are provided free of charge to partners who currently use an alternative database but wish to migrate to Oracle. However, places are limited so ISVs interested in attending a workshop should contact their local Oracle offices to find out if they can be accommodated.
