Clusterware
Overview
Oracle Clusterware is portable cluster software that allows clustering of independent servers so that they cooperate as a single system. Oracle Clusterware was first released with Oracle Database 10g Release 1 as the required cluster technology for the Oracle multi-instance RDBMS, Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC).
Oracle Clusterware 12c Release 1 is the integrated foundation for Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) and the High Availability (HA) and resource management framework for all applications on any major platform. Oracle Clusterware 12c builds on the innovative technology introduced in 11g by providing comprehensive multi-tiered HA and resource management for consolidated environments. Leverage Oracle Clusterware in the Cloud to provide enterprise-class resiliency where required, and dynamic, online allocation of compute resources where you need it, when you need it.
Oracle Clusterware Licensing:
Oracle Clusterware can be downloaded and used free of charge. To receive support for Oracle Clusterware, a licensed Oracle product must be used in the clustered environment. Licensed Oracle products include OVM for LINUX or SPARC, Oracle Linux, Oracle Solaris, or any of the licensed Oracle application.
The Oracle Grid Infrastructure provides the necessary components to manage high availability (HA) for any business critical application. HA in consolidated environments is no longer simple active/standby fail over. These environments require run-time workload management that guarantees resource allocation when required. Oracle Grid Infrastructure Agents enable workload management and HA for Oracle applications.
Previous to Oracle Grid Infrastructure 12c, the agent delivery model is stand-alone. These agents are available for download from the OTN downloads tab on this page and can be configured in a user defined agent home. The stand-alone installation model offers greater flexibility in agent home directory configuration and subsequent agent upgrades. This is the preferred installation model and will continue to be available for 12c support. Customers can deploy 11.2.0.3+ or 12.1+ stand-alone agents using the OTN download tab.
Oracle Grid Infrastructure 12c introduces Bundled Agents where the agents are delivered with the Oracle Grid Infrastructure software release and subsequent patches. This deployment model defines the agent home under the Oracle Grid Infrastructure directory tree and complies with the inventory for the GI deployment. For this reason, the 12c bundled agents can only be upgraded with the Oracle Grid Infrastructure. The agent stand-alone versions can not be installed in the Oracle Grid Infrastructure 12c bundled agent home. You must chose whether to deploy the stand-alone or bundled versions.
The Oracle Grid Infrastructure Agents (bundled or stand-alone) adhere to the Oracle Clusterware Licensing noted above. Click on the Downloads tab or visit http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/products/clusterware/downloads/index.html today!

For those applications that cannot co-locate with the Oracle Database in a standard cluster or Flex Cluster, the 12c Application Cluster allows you to install and configure the Oracle 12c Grid Infrastructure for applications in a stand-alone cluster. This configuration removes Oracle Database specific resources from the clusterware and allows for either shared storage, ACFS or remote ASM storage for the Oracle Clusterware repository and voting devices. This builds on the Oracle 'thin' Cluster introduced in 11g.
