By integrating databases into a high-performing and scalable Oracle Exadata instead of building databases individually, we reduced system costs by up to 30%. In addition, Oracle Identity Management solutions provided a highly secure and reliable identity authentication platform to support a growing number of internal and external customers and improve service quality.

DOCOMO Systems, Inc. is a subsidiary of NTT DOCOMO Inc., which is the largest mobile service provider in Japan with 60 million customers. DOCOMO Systems plans, develops, and maintains information systems primarily for the group companies within NTT DOCOMO. To improve work efficiency, the company launched a cloud-based corporate information system to support shared services across 30 subsidiary companies, including accounts payable and employee attendance management. By adding security features to the cloud platform, DOCOMO Systems expanded services to external companies and enabled users to access the system via mobile devices. NTT DOCOMO decided to gradually implement the information system to the entire NTT Group.

Challenges
  • Improve the performance, scalability, and reliability of the mobile service provider’s corporate information system to support future growth in user companies and data volume due to the expansion of the system to the entire NTT Group
  • Deliver high-quality cloud services and attract more internal and external customers to use the information system by ensuring high availability and reducing the costs of building and maintaining the system
  • Introduce a cost-effective and easy-to-deploy identity management platform that supports various authentication formats and enables customers to continue using their existing authentication system
Results
  • Reduced system operating costs by up to 30% and delivered more cost-effective services to NTT Group companies and external customers by integrating databases into Oracle Exadata Database Machine instead of developing and maintaining individual databases in the corporate information system
  • Improved customers’ work efficiency by providing a high-performing and scalable database platform that can rapidly process massive volumes of business data, such as expense settlement, accumulated from a growing number of internal and external customers
  • Ensured reliable and high-quality service for customers with Oracle Real Application Clusters to enable efficient sharing of server and storage resources for database services and achieve rapid failover should a server go down
  • Gained a flexible, cost-effective identity management platform to support future expansion by using Oracle Access Management Suite to integrate seamlessly with different customers’ authentication platforms, such as Lightweight Directory Access Protocol and Security Assertion Markup Language
  • Eliminated the need for customers to reset their user IDs and enabled them to continue using their existing ID system—simplifying implementations
  • Enhanced user experience by providing single sign-on service for multiple systems, enabling customers to rapidly access information such as expense reports and reset their own passwords
  • Enabled rapid deployment of the information system to NTT Group companies by using Oracle Virtual Directory to synchronize with user ID information from various authentication systems and enable easy connection with other software as a service platforms
  • Increased data security by using Oracle Exadata to maintain a real-time copy of databases for user companies at two disaster recovery sites—ensuring rapid data recovery and minimal data loss in the event of an unexpected disaster

Why Oracle

DOCOMO Systems chose Oracle Exadata to integrate existing databases rather than developing additional individual databases because it offers a high-performance, reliable, and scalable database platform, enabling the company to minimize IT operating costs. In addition, DOCOMO Systems selected Oracle Access Management Suite and Oracle Virtual Directory over other authentication products on the market for their superior features and cost-effectiveness.

“When we were evaluating multiple vendors, one of our key business requirements was using a standardized protocol to ensure rapid deployment of the information system to the other group companies. Oracle’s open architecture was clearly the right choice, helping us to reduce costs and improve our services,” said Hidenori Miyamoto, director, Cloud Systems Development Department, DOCOMO Systems, Inc.

“Using Oracle Exadata for data warehousing was another factor in our decision, as we plan to enable non-indexed searches in the corporate information system,” said Yusuke Yamane, director, Cloud Systems Development Department, DOCOMO Systems, Inc.

We’ve been using Oracle products for our group’s IT infrastructure for a long time. This gave us confidence that Oracle would continue to incorporate the latest features and offer excellent performance, which enables us to reliably store our customers’ valuable data and support growth.

Execution

After undertaking concept planning, DOCOMO Systems implemented Oracle Exadata to consolidate the databases for its corporate information system. The company conducted tests and launched the new database platform in approximately seven months. DOCOMO Systems subsequently deployed Oracle Access Management Suite and Oracle Directory Service for its identity authentication platform to complete the new architecture.
