Before Exadata

Mission-critical databases were run on best-of-breed servers, storage, and networking that were stitched together by systems integrators in an involved and expensive process.

There were two challenges with this do-it-yourself approach. It led to significant performance, scalability, stability, and management issues; and it couldn’t cope with new classes of workloads.

Oracle realized that there was a better way to address both challenges at the same time by engineering the hardware and software together to deliver extreme database performance and greater customer value.

2008

Exadata V1 launches as the first data warehouse machine with revolutionary Smart Scan technology that offloads basic SQL queries to the first and only smart scale-out storage over ultra-fast InfiniBand, enabling the delivery of 10x faster performance than existing Oracle data warehouses.

2009

Exadata V2 becomes the world's first OLTP machine. It integrates Flash Cache to accelerate reads and Hybrid Columnar Compression to increase data warehouse and archival storage efficiency by 10X to 50X.

2010

Exadata X2 arrives, bringing the ability to support up to 10X faster data warehouse queries and 10X more concurrent users.

2012

Exadata X3 introduces write-back cache that enables extreme performance for OLTP, analytics, and multi-workload consolidation.

2013

Exadata X4 adds in-memory database capabilities to dramatically accelerate query performance.

2015

Exadata X5 integrates columnar flash cache for increased data warehouse performance, and Capacity-on-Demand database licensing for greater customer value.

2016

Exadata X6 offers support for Oracle Cloud through the Exadata Cloud Service and Exadata Cloud at Customer so customers can take advantage of Oracle Cloud benefits while maintaining control of their databases within their own datacenters.

2017

Exadata X7 launches as the power behind Autonomous Database and incorporates in-memory analytics which accelerate key data warehouse activity by up to 100X.

2019

Exadata X8 introduces new machine learning algorithms to automatically index databases, streamline management, and increase security. It includes new storage options for low-cost in-database archiving of critical data.

2019

Exadata X8M launches with persistent memory and RoCE internal networking that revolutionizes OLTP with 10X lower SQL IO latency and over 16 million SQL IOPS for all workloads.

2020

Today, 77% of Global 100 companies run Oracle Exadata, including four of the top five banks, telco’s, and retailers. These customers and many others are routinely running Exadata solutions in 24/7 mission-critical environments with 99.999% availability requirements.

Designing and delivering Exadata as an integrated whole makes it easier to optimize database security, identify new threats, and rapidly address them with full-stack patching. Oracle Exadata and complementary products like Oracle’s Zero Data Loss Recovery Appliance and Oracle Database Backup Cloud Service will continue to evolve to address new threats and help protect your most valuable data.

Exadata is the foundation of our SaaS services, Autonomous Database, Exadata Cloud Service, and Exadata Gen 2 Cloud at Customer. Exadata will continue to meet the SLAs that customers require for OLTP, data warehousing, and consolidated database workloads in all types of cloud environments. It will simplify their cloud journeys by maximizing commonality across these environments.
