Challenges

A word from Angel Trains Limited

  • Deliver value on US$5.5 billion worth of rolling stock through more efficient maintenance and upgrade project management, including interior refurbishments and complete carriage and bodywork overhauls
  • Improve collaboration with all 19 UK train operators, including Virgin Trains and First Great Western, that lease units from Angel Trains to better manage rolling-stock availability, plan maintenance work , and provide optimum leasing solutions
  • Streamline communications with suppliers and improve efficiency
  • Improve planning, budgeting, and forecasting accuracy to address industry and business challenges that accompany the busy period of rail franchise renewal

Solutions

  • Used Oracle Business Intelligence Suite, Enterprise Edition to extract data from Oracle Hyperion Planning Plus, Oracle Projects, and a legacy, asset-management tool to determine customer, lease, carriage, vehicle, and employee performance and profitability; monitor key performance indicators; identify pinch points; and take remedial action
  • Delivered daily dashboards to decision-makers and enabled executives at all levels to refresh and drill down into performance data on the desktop to enable real-time decision-making
  • Improved purchasing cycles by enabling approximately 30 engineers to purchase routinely required consulting work—such as stock repair and train interior design services—from approved suppliers at prenegotiated prices, using the self-service functionality in Oracle Sourcing, without requiring the purchasing team’s involvement
  • Provided finance teams with a real-time view of spending commitments and automated the procure-to-pay cycle with Oracle Purchasing
  • Increased supplier-order pipeline and invoice-payment status visibility with Oracle iSupplier Portal, which cut calls to the accounts-payable team and reduced purchasing and sourcing headcount by one full-time equivalent
  • Improved train maintenance and enhancement costing and billing accuracy by using Oracle Project Costing and Oracle Project Billing to plan maintenance activities, forecast costs and apportion them over the lease lifetime, and identify which enhancements add the most value to the business and to customers
  • Integrated financial planning with operational planning using Oracle Hyperion Planning Plus to reduce period close times, improve long-term forecasting for optimized rolling-stock leasing terms, and to ensure revenues and expenses are accrued in the correct accounting period—all which helps improve long-term planning
  • Used Oracle User Productivity Kit’s content-creation tools and online-training modules to cut staff training time from four months to two, and significantly reduced application-testing time
  • Created complete knowledge paths for each process or job function, tracked user skills, and conducted regular assessments
  • Streamlined business processes and improved efficiencies by replacing fragmented legacy systems with an enterprisewide platform based on Oracle E-Business Suite
  • Used Oracle Consulting’s expertise to build integrated process flows that link in-house, customized fleet-management; lease-administration; engineering; and asset-management systems with off-the-shelf, Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.1 applications, hosted and managed by Oracle Managed Cloud Services
  • Eliminated the need for dependence on manually generated input and improved data accuracy, enforced best-practices, reduced cycle times, and improved end-user productivity

Why Oracle

Angel Trains evaluated solutions from SAP and Infor, but felt that Oracle’s solution would best improve efficiency and add value to the business.

“Oracle worked as a team to understand our challenges and business opportunities,” said Steve Lamey, program director, Angel Trains Limited. “It demonstrated the necessary industry knowledge and technical capabilities to meet transportation-industry challenges and support increased efficiency.”

Implementation Process

Oracle Consulting led the implementation process and used Oracle Business Accelerators to reduce time for project scoping; system design; and conference-room-based pilots, which enabled Angel Trains to quickly view its own data in a live environment. Oracle Consulting used its technical expertise and experience in the travel and transportation sector to configure standard Oracle processes to the specific requirements of Angel Trains’ business. The functional experts helped ensure a smooth transition, rapid acceptance by users, and faster time to value.

“The team from Oracle Consulting demonstrated exceptional knowledge of the rail sector,” said Steve Lamey, program director, Angel Trains Limited. “They had the right experience required to back up the Oracle product implementation, which reduced our overall project risks. Oracle Consulting built a reliable, flexible platform that will adapt to changes in the dynamic rail industry and scale as our business evolves.”
