Eurotech Creates Full Machine-to-Machine Service Offering that Accelerates Innovation Based on Advanced Technology Building Blocks with Open and Industry Standards

  • Oracle Customer:  Eurotech
    Location:  Columbia, Maryland
    Industry:  High Technology
    Employees:  450
Annual Revenue:  $100 to $500 Million

Eurotech is a global company with its roots in the field of embedded computers and machine-to-machine (M2M) connectivity, specializing in the defense, transportation, industrial, and medical segments. It integrates hardware, software, services, and expertise to deliver embedded computing platforms and subsystems to leading equipment manufacturers, systems integrators, and enterprise customers for successful and efficient deployment of their products and services. Drawing on concepts of minimalist computing, Eurotech lowers power draw, minimizes physical size, and reduces coding complexity to bring sensors, embedded platforms, subsystems, ready-to-use devices, and high-performance computers to market. By combining domain expertise in cloud communications, wireless connectivity and industry-specific protocols, Eurotech architects integrated solutions that simplify data capture, processing, transfer, and action over unified communications networks.

In 2013, Gartner, a leading IT analyst firm, named Eurotech as one of four Cool Vendors in its 2013 IT/OT Alignment and Integration report, based on Eurotech’s Everyware Cloud, which provides an M2M integration platform as a service (iPaaS) and the company’s Everyware Software Framework (ESF).

A word from Eurotech

  • “The goal of our Everyware Software Framework (ESF) and Everyware Cloud M2M iPaaS solution is to help M2M developers accelerate time to market, reduce the cost of support, and lower overall risk. Oracle Java SE Embedded and Hitachi SuperJ OSGi, built on industry standards and leading platforms, in their own right, are fundamental to our ability to deliver on each of these value propositions.” – Marco Carrer, Vice President, Software Engineering, Eurotech

  • Advance successful development and deployment of M2M solutions across a broad range of vertical markets
  • Provide M2M developers and solution manufacturers with a competitive advantage through a complete M2M solution, including the device-based application software framework and an M2M iPaaS offering that helps accelerate prototyping and time to market, reduce risk, lower barriers to entry, and future proof applications
  • Ensure a reliable, scalable, and standards-based M2M/internet of things (IoT) platform

Oracle Product and Services

  • Used Oracle Java SE Embedded and Hitachi SuperJ Open Services Gateway Initiative (OSGi) platform as the foundation for Eurotech’s ESF application software framework and cloud-based M2M iPaaS offering
  • Assured a strong platform for M2M applications deployed on multiservice gateways by relying on leading industry partners to provide the technology basis for device, network, and service abstraction as well as efficient development
  • Used Oracle Java SE Embedded to provide the widest cross-platform capability—from the smallest microcontroller devices to high-performing enterprise systems—allowing developers to port the same software across many devices to lower costs and accelerate innovation
  • Reduced risk with the world’s most widely deployed, secure, and reliable development platform
  • Gained the ability to tap into the work of more than 9 million developers building applications on Java—improving productivity
  • Equipped developers to code and then quickly test software—and identify bugs faster—without leaving the emulated environment and ensured rapid transition from emulate, deploy, and provision modes
  • Accelerated quality assurance cycles and removed reinvention requirements to speed time to market
  • Increased flexibility and roadmap planning by maximizing cross-platform support through compliant standards, Java Community Process, and OSGi
  • Cut the cost of device lifecycle management and support through remote configuration and updates
  • Delivered the ability to make changes dynamically to devices and adopt a modularized approach with Oracle Java SE Embedded and Hitachi SuperJ OSGi
  • Provided a low-risk and minimal upfront communication software and hardware investment by building on established and open standards
  • Reduced need for complicated software documentation by implementing out-of-the-box tools

Why Oracle

“Oracle Java SE Embedded and the Hitachi SuperJ OSGI framework are proven advanced M2M technology building blocks, based on open and industry standards. Oracle was the obvious choice for us. Java provides a large development ecosystem and helps to speed time to market while reducing risk—all compelling value propositions for us and our M2M and IoT services customers,” said Marco Carrer, vice president, software engineering, Eurotech.

Implementation Process

Hitachi’s SuperJ Applications Ecosystem is a framework for the OSGi service platform. In combination with Oracle Java Embedded Suite, SuperJ facilitates the modularization of software components and applications and assures interoperability of applications and services over a variety of M2M Devices. Hitachi Communication Technologies America, Inc. is an Oracle partner.
