At DMA we now have the stability we didn't have before we started running four production and development environment solutions on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. We are able to guarantee the scalability, and we have an extremely high level of customer and user satisfaction with this system.

Business challenges

A leader in the Brazilian retail and wholesale food markets, DMA Distribuidora in the last four years has experienced an expansion boom, opening stores throughout Brazil. DMA now has 168 facilities in 10 states, with 34 supermarkets and 134 wholesale centers. Until 2019, the distributor had operations in only three states. DMA continued growing and expanding throughout 2020, amid the coronavirus pandemic, opening 30 facilities and recording a 50% increase in revenue.

To sustain all this growth and execute on future expansion goals, the company needed to modernize its computing infrastructure to gain operating stability that the group lacked.

The focus was to increase the performance of our environment by around 75%. The result was over 100%. We tested other clouds, and we quickly and easily realized the benefits of Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.

Why DMA Distribuidora Chose Oracle

Migrating systems to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) was DMA’s first major strategic decision in this push to modernize. Oracle Database Cloud Service’s scalability and stability proved the deciding factors for the company. DMA tested other providers’ clouds, but Oracle emerged as the favorite. The simplicity of the licensing process between DMA and Oracle also made a big difference.

“All of these factors led us to make the decision to continue within Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. The focus [of the test] was on the production environment for a financial solution,” says Marco Túlio Cabral, chief technology officer of DMA. “We realized that we achieved great gains and ended up bringing other solutions to run on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.”

Results

Using Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, DMA saw more than a 100% performance improvement, while tickets from user complaints decreased considerably. Over the first six months, there was not a single complaint or incident. "For us as IT pros, it is very good because it ends up minimizing our work managing our company's computing environment," says Cabral.

The migration went smoothly as well. "Oracle experts supported us throughout this project,” he says. “DMA doesn't have any Oracle DBAs, and we were able to do this migration without any problems."

DMA expects OCI to help as the group continues with its expansion plans, including new operations most likely in northeast Brazil. “When you get addicted to retail, you can't get out of it,” Cabral says. “This dynamism of retail is extremely interesting for us, and it motivates us.”
