Oracle’s software and hardware solutions have fundamentally improved the way we operate. We can integrate information across departments, enable project collaboration, choose the best suppliers, and better control project execution.

— Shumon A. Zaman, Vice President – Information Systems and Technology, Lamprell Energy Ltd.

Based in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and with over 40 years of experience, Lamprell Energy Ltd., Lamprell for short, is a leading provider of fabrication, engineering and contracting services to the offshore and onshore oil and gas and renewable energy industries. Business Challenge
  • Integrate core-business and back-office applications to minimize manual processes, boost efficiency and collaboration, and provide a single source of information for all engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) functions
  • Improve hardware power to boost application speed and simplify administration of IT infrastructure to reduce IT total cost of ownership (TCO)
  • Provide real-time visibility of business-critical data—such as material and labor costs and employee utilization—throughout each project phase, to enable tighter budget controls
  • Improve management of suppliers and subcontractors—a critical factor considering the huge spend necessary for constructing oil and gas platforms—to minimize project costs and reduce administration time such as vendor registration and evaluation which was previously carried out offline.
Results
  • Increased business efficiency and collaboration by deploying an end-to-end Oracle solution consisting of SPARC servers, Oracle Solaris, Pillar Axiom, and Oracle E-Business Suite to fully integrate all EPC business functions that were previously siloed—including bids and estimation, planning, engineering, document management, procurement and supply chain, project management, production, and quality assurance.
  • Deployed Oracle’s SPARC T5-2 servers as well as SPARC T5-1B and SPARC T4-1Bserver modules to increase the performance of more than 20 Oracle E-Business Suite modules and handle more than 2 million transactions every month, reducing overall TCO
  • Redefined all business processes and aligned them to Oracle E-Business Suite to provide a seamless flow in every core function, enabling projects such as new rigs—which require two years to build—to be managed entirely within a single system, from estimation to final handover
  • Eliminated manual processes and duplication thanks to a single, integrated system that unifies core business with back-office applications and enables rapid and efficient distribution of all project data—providing, for example, purchase order approvers with fingertip access to information such as the project budget and costs to date, without needing to search for the data across multiple applications
  • Provided greater transparency throughout the lifecycle of projects such as onshore and offshore rig refurbishments by enabling managers to see information in real time—such as material costs or work hours to date—empowering them to rapidly take the necessary action to ensure the timely completion of projects within budget
  • Improved management of more than 5,000 suppliers by introducing Oracle iSupplier portal, helping purchasing and supply chain staff to efficiently manage up to 4,500 invoices every month thanks to supplier self-service and consolidation
  • Used Oracle Solaris 11 to simplify administration of IT infrastructure, for example by using Oracle Solaris Zones virtualization to improve resource management and monitoring, and by using boot environments to provide fast updates and an easy point-of-time recovery in the event of a system crash
  • Increased storage capacity and optimized application performance based on business needs, easily managing the increased data volume of acquisitions and business expansion with Pillar Axiom 600 storage system

Why They Chose Oracle

Lamprell shortlisted enterprise resource planning solutions from Oracle, SAP and other major vendors. Key selection criteria included alignment to EPC business requirements, scalability, integration capabilities with unique third-party applications such as commissioning software, and TCO.

“We had discussions with other vendors but selected Oracle because it provides the most flexible solution and best-of-breed approach. Our business is highly specific, and connecting our unique applications to Oracle E-Business Suite was far less problematic than if we had selected another vendor,” said Shumon A. Zaman, vice president, information systems and technology, Lamprell Energy Ltd.

For its hardware solution, Lamprell recognized the efficiency gains of deploying SPARC servers running Oracle Solaris 11 that have been specifically tailored for optimum performance of Oracle applications. In addition, the single-vendor solution means that any IT issues are rapidly resolved with a single point of contact.

Oracle’s SPARC servers have performed well with no major issues, and have excellent storage facilities.
