General Petroleum Company Improves Application Performance up to 3x and Aligns Software Spend with Business Growth

General Petroleum Company (GPC) is an Egyptian company which since 1957 has been engaged in oil and gas exploration, and the production and development of hydrocarbons. It is Egypt's leading national oil and gas company and one of the first oil and gas companies in Middle East and Africa. GPC’s vision is to be one of the most distinguished companies in its field, while maintaining clean environment initiatives. GPC explores oil and gas producing fields throughout Egypt, such as the Eastern Desert, Gulf of Suez, Sinai, and Western Desert.

Business Challenge
  • Empower users with increased database and applications performance so that the company continues to be the leading public sector company in the oil and gas arena
  • Reduce GPC’s software license costs and eliminate compatibility issues by running databases and an in-house developed enterprise resource planning (ERP) system on a single optimized hardware platform
  • Carry out backups of operational, financial, and HR data without interrupting operations several times per week
Results
  • Deployed Oracle Database Appliance to ensure greater system efficiencies, improving database and applications performance up to 3x and reducing processing times of the oil and gas company’s critical applications by 50%
  • Gained the ability to deploy database and application workloads on a single, virtualized platform, ensuring compatibility between applications and database servers, and providing access to GPC’s critical operational, financial, and HR information
  • Strengthened business continuity and reduced the customer complaints to two per month by utilizing Oracle Database Appliance`s out of the box platform architecture with more resources and using virtualization effectively with Oracle VM
  • Increased business agility by eliminating backup downtime, which included terminating critical services, from previously twice per week to none
  • Reduced Oracle Database license costs and aligned software spending with business growth by leveraging Oracle Database Appliance’s capacity for on demand licensing for multiple workloads to scale up to 72 processors without hardware upgrades
  • Simplified deployment, maintenance, and support of high availability database solutions by running Oracle Database, Enterprise Edition, Oracle Diagnosis Pack, and Oracle Tuning Pack on Oracle Database Appliance

In comparison to other vendors and solutions, Oracle Database Appliance came across as the most efficient and cost-effective hardware platform for running our databases and applications.

— Mohamed Atef, Database Administrator, General Petroleum Company

Execution

The migration was undertaken by initially creating a test environment, installing Oracle Database Appliance and database template, creating a virtual machine, and then migrating Oracle Database and Oracle Forms and Reports. Since the database server and the application server were installed on the same machine, there were some code compatibility aspects during the process that required customization. The deployment was undertaken in 50 working days, with no special training needed for the company’s 300 users.
