We always had high expectations for Oracle Database technology. That’s why we felt secure even for our first migration to the cloud from an on-premises sales management system. Oracle’s cutting-edge Autonomous Database cloud environment is compatible with Bring Your Own License, which is great because we can continue using our existing license.

Business challenges

Toei, founded in 1951, is Japan’s premier movie production and distribution company. In addition to having released over 3,300 movies in cinemas, it had a hand in the creation of over 2,600 made-for-TV movies.

Besides researching cutting-edge digital video, Toei operates in 14 different business fields. This synergy allows the company to offer excellent visual entertainment to the world as a comprehensive content production company.

All work, from planning, developing, maintaining, operating, and managing internal systems, had fallen to the IT department, and company leaders realized they needed to act quickly to lighten this load. Because most internal IT systems were constructed and operated in an on-premises environment, Toei was looking for a way to reduce the operational maintenance load.

We’ve used Oracle databases for over 20 years, and we didn't want to change that. That’s why Oracle was our only option when moving to the cloud. To be honest, I was really surprised with the performance improvements by just moving to Oracle Autonomous Database. This move has really made the benefits of OCI clear.

Why Toei Company chose Oracle

Toei has been using Oracle Database Standard Edition on-premises for over 20 years. Its sales management system has run stably for many years, allowing the business departments to use it without issues.

The company decided Oracle Autonomous Database on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) was the only option, because there would be no need to change the user interface or the application, to retrain the business departments, or to pay additional costs to switch over.

Additionally, as Oracle Autonomous Database is offered as a fully managed cloud database, self-tuning and autoscaling would reduce complex maintenance time.

Another benefit was cost, as Oracle allows for “bring your own license,” which allows Toei to move on-premises Oracle Standard Database Edition licenses it currently owns for equivalent Oracle Cloud Infrastructure services, such as Oracle Autonomous Database.

Results

Moving the sales system’s database to Autonomous Transaction Processing on OCI cut both cost and administration time for Toei. The smooth migration of the on-premises database platform to the cloud did not disrupt the sales application for business users.

Toei IT staff and business users did notice the performance improvements were greater than they had initially anticipated, including a 50% increase in processing speed for business applications. Batch operations to move data from the database to the on-premises data warehouse system used to take around 45 minutes, but now take only 20 minutes or so. This means performance has more than doubled, which in turn has halved processing time, for greater business efficiency. The self-patching, self-tuning, and monitoring functions of ATP reduced database maintenance for lower total cost of ownership.

Using the tutorials offered by Oracle, Toei was able to move from an on-premises environment to Oracle Autonomous Transaction Processing independently. It took just one month for construction, and only two days to transfer the data.
