Modern Cloud Day Keynote

Valery Lanovenko

Managing Director Australia and New Zealand, Oracle

Valery Lanovenko is Oracle’s vice president of Technology business and managing director for Australia and New Zealand. He joined Oracle in 2009 and has more than 25 years of proven technology industry and management experience.

Prior to his current role, Valery was vice president of Sales Strategy for Oracle Japan, responsible for the development of Oracle’s technology business and the management of large strategic deals in the country.

He also worked as vice president of Oracle’s Central Europe region and as vice president and managing director of Oracle Russia and CIS. Before joining Oracle, Valery served as country manager of Apple Russia and as general manager for Microsoft Ukraine. Prior to that, he held numerous senior management positions at Hewlett-Packard in Europe and in its Asia-Pacific headquarters. Valery holds a master’s degree in Management from the BI Norwegian Business School.

Dr. Andrew Sutherland

Senior Vice President, Business Development, Technology License and Systems, Oracle Europe, Middle East, Africa and Asia Pacific

Andrew Sutherland is Oracle senior vice president for Systems and Technology for EMEA and APAC. He is responsible for growing market share, developing business strategies, and managing competencies in Oracle’s technology and systems offerings. Andrew has worked at Oracle since 1995, holding executive positions in technology sales, commercial strategy, and business development. Andrew holds an MBA, a PhD in digital signal processing, and a first-class BSc in electrical and electronic engineering from the University of Edinburgh. He is a chartered engineer and has contributed to more than 15 technical publications on multimedia and business issues.

Adrian Johnston

Senior Vice President, Applications, Japan and Asia Pacific, Oracle

Adrian Johnston is senior vice president of Applications for Oracle in Japan and Asia Pacific. He is responsible for leading the business for Oracle’s cloud offerings in the applications space. Adrian first joined Oracle in 2002 as vice president of Applications and Product Operations for Asia Pacific. He then went on to hold several other positions, including vice president of the Applications Midmarket business unit. From 2008 to 2015, Adrian held the position of vice president of the Microsoft Business Solutions Division in Asia, after which he returned to Oracle. Adrian holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of New South Wales.

Lara Ariell

Chief Financial Officer, Inland Revenue Department New Zealand

Lara joined Inland Revenue in April 2016. Before joining IR, Lara was the Deputy Chief Executive - Finance at the Tertiary Education Commission. Lara worked for the Ministry of Justice initially as the CFO and then as General Manager Performance and Improvement, Courts and Tribunals. She also spent time as the CFO at Te Papa Tongarewa, the Museum of New Zealand, and working in planning and finance teams across the public sector. Lara started her career working in receivership and insolvency with accountancy firm Price Waterhouse and then McCallum Petterson and Co.

Matt Faries

Matt Faries is an innovative and transformational technology professional with experience creating and leading high performing engineering teams across both financial services and digital media industries. After starting his career building web apps for CBA and Bank of Queensland he realised that his passion was for people leadership and finding ways to better align Business and Technology outcomes. With a focus on unlocking the potential of teams he leads, Matt was part of the leadership team overseeing digital transformations at two of Australia’s leading media organisations. Prior to joining AFG in May 2018, he helped establish the Cloud and Devops capabilities at Bankwest, as part of the organisation-wide digital transformation strategy.

Cyril Lam is Head of IT at Moose Toys, a family owned and run Australian toy company. Moose leads in ground-breaking design, development and manufacturing of award-winning toys. Renee Dumble

Project Manager Followmont Transport

Renee is responsible for leading the design, planning and implementation of projects including the recent HR digital transformation with the deployment of the Human Capital Management system – OracleHCM.

Renee commenced with Followmont Transport in 2015 as an HR generalist, partnering with the business to deliver high-performance outcomes. Identifying an internal mobility opportunity, in 2019 Renee transitioned to the position of Project Manager within the IT Department to gain a greater level of exposure of the business operations and digital landscape. Holding a Bachelor and Post-Graduate Degrees, Renee has gained over 10 years of HR experience across various industries including Transportation and Logistics, Australian Immigration, Finance, Legal and Mining Services. Digitalisation and change management is a passion for Renee, as she approaches all projects with the mindset that the human element must remain the focus.

Nadeem Rahman

Cloud Domain Leader, APAC SaaS, Oracle

Nadeem is a Human Resources domain expert with over 15 years of experience across the Asia Pacific region. His process background is in Human Resources and Campus Solutions. Nadeem has worked across many industries including education, health, government, technology, financial services, entertainment, utilities and automotive. From a Human Resources perspective, Nadeem has both operational and systems related experience. He has previously implemented and managed an outsourced HR shared service centre, covering 15 countries in the Asia Pacific region, supporting over 50,000 employees for a number of Fortune 500 companies. In addition, he has completed a number of HR systems implementations, particularly of the PeopleSoft HCM product, both as a functional lead and project manager.

Chief Technology Officer, Emersion Software Systems

Martin began coding while still in high school. He cut his teeth in IT in the support teams of some of Australia’s earliest internet providers. An experienced Chief Technology Officer and Solutions Architect, Martin has over 15 years’ experience architecting next generation billing platforms at some of Australia’s leading telecommunications and managed service providers. In 2008, he joined Emersion from Dodo and was given the task of building a cloud-based subscription billing solution before the cloud had a name! As a very early adopter to the cloud, Martin has an in-depth understanding of where technology is heading.

Christopher Gordon

Associate Professor, The University of Sydney

Associate Professor Christopher Gordon is a teaching and research academic at Sydney Nursing School, Faculty of Medicine and Health, The University of Sydney. He is a Research Leader of insomnia and chronobiology research at Woolcock Institute of Medical Research. His research focuses on phenotyping, pathophysiology and treatment responses of insomnia. He is currently the national project leader of the insomnia program in the Alertness CRC and is leading the development of novel translational digital therapies. He has worked with academic, industry and government partners on research projects focusing on health solutions at the population level.

Tancy Kao

Data Scientist, Woolcock Institute of Medical Research

Tancy Kao is a Senior Research Data Scientist at Woolcock Institute of Medical Research. She has over 10 years of experience in cognitive neuroscience and uses machine learning and statistics to analyse neurophysiological signals. She also has an industry experience of building and productionising bespoke models to analyse and report in real-time the learning behaviour from click-by-click rich activity report data collected from K12 students’ computers during classrooms. She is responsible for analysing and building models of complex real-world sleep disorders. She applies machine learning and deep learning to biometric timeseries to predict sleep problems.

Neil Mendelson

Neil Mendelson is Vice President of Big Data and Advanced Analytics, Product Management within Oracle Server Technologies. Neil is currently responsible for Oracle’s Big Data, Hadoop, Spark and Machine Learning Products including: Big Data Cloud Service, Big Data Cloud Machine, Big Data SQL Cloud Service, Big Data Appliance, Big Data SQL, Advanced Analytics and Oracle R Advanced Analytics for Hadoop. Neil returned to Oracle having originally been responsible for Data Warehousing within Product Management. In the intervening 10 years Neil has held roles in Product Management and Development with Business Objects, Mindjet and Cloud9 Analytics, which has contributed to his broad and deep understanding of the Big Data, Analytics, Business Intelligence, Data Warehousing and Cloud marketplaces.

Alain Floch

Alain is head of analytics & big data solutions for Oracle in APAC. In this role Alain is leading and managing the Analytics & Big Data Solution Specialists team with a focus on Big Data Platform & Analytics, Data Visualization, Data Science and Cloud Solutions. Alain’s team is responsible for rolling out new product releases in APAC and to assure that the right Go to Market initiatives and enablement are provided to the APAC teams on Analytics & Big Data. He is a subject matter expert on Analytics & Big Data and regular speaker in seminars and assists companies in Asia gain competitive advantage by leveraging analytics on all their data. Karan Batta

Karan has been with Oracle Cloud over 2 years and leads the product solutions team for OCI that covers Oracle applications on OCI, HPC, Big Data, AI/ML, Hardware and more. Prior to Oracle he spent several years building core compute services and distributed systems at Microsoft Azure. Taylor Newill

Senior Manager, Product Management, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure

Taylor is a Senior Manager of Product Management at Oracle. He is responsible for Oracle Cloud's HPC and GPU products and has extensive background in HPC, first running multiple Aerodynamic Optimisation startups and then launching Microsoft Azure's HPC offerings. He joined Oracle in 2018 to build a bare-metal HPC offering that delivers on-premises performance. He lives in the United States and works out of the Oracle Cloud Headquarters in Seattle, Washington.

Kaslin Fields

Kaslin is a Cloud Advocate at Oracle, Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) Ambassador, and comic artist/writer. By day, she uses her knowledge of cloud native technologies to help Oracle Cloud’s customers along their journeys toward cloud native and devops adoption. By night, she explains those concepts her own way by creating comics (available at https://kaslin.rocks) that explain tech concepts through fun analogies and story-telling suitable for all ages.

Eran Feigenbaum

Chief Security Officer, Oracle Cloud

Eran is the chief information security officer (CISO) for the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) where he leads all aspects of security for the platform that powers Oracle’s cloud services globally. With more than 20 years of experience in the information security space, a lot of his focus is on driving security innovation, helping customers in highly-regulated industries achieve compliance and security imperatives best on Oracle’s second-generation cloud. Eran is the recipient of several awards for excellence in security. A frequent speaker and author, Eran has been a featured by the Wall Street Journal, Cloud Security Alliance, and the RSA Conference. Prior to Oracle, Eran served as SVP and CISO of Jet.com (acquired by Walmart), Director of Security at Google and CISO of PricewaterhouseCoopers. Earlier, Eran spent several years designing and implementing high-performance cryptosystems for Fortune 1000 clients and government agencies. He is co-author if Mitigating E-Business Risks: Public Key Infrastructures in the Real World, ISC2 Press. He has held several board memberships at security start-ups and international chambers of commerce. A long-time champion of diversity in cybersecurity, Eran takes an interdisciplinary approach to building security teams so that they benefit from diversity of backgrounds, skills, life experience and perspectives. Eran holds a BS in Electrical and Computer Engineering from UC Irvine and an MBA from Pepperdine University.

Duncan Fitter

Director of Analytics for EMEA & APAC, Product Management, Oracle

Duncan Fitter is currently the director for analytics within Oracle’s product management team. As a member of the product management team, Sam drives the effort to encourage adoption of Oracle’s private cloud solutions, with particular expertise in open sourced, cloud focused, development tools and environments. Sam brings a wealth of knowledge of the IT industry having worked in multiple roles in Oracle for nine years and previously in Sun Microsystems for ten years. Sam is based in Sydney, Australia.

Peter Thomas has been with Oracle since 1993 and is currently senior director, engineered systems at Oracle ANZ. In this role, Peter is responsible for Engineered Systems solutions in the ANZ region and has been involved with the Exadata product since its release in 2008. Before moving to this role, Peter was the senior director, technology solutions for the technology business unit at Oracle Asia Pacific. From 2004 to 2006, he was the senior director, enterprise architecture in the industries business unit. Before joining Oracle, Peter spent the previous 7 years in a variety of technical and marketing roles relating to relational database technology products at Ingres, Informix and Computer Associates and has over 30 years’ experience in the IT industry.

Richard joined Qantas in 1986 and in 2008 was one of Qantas’ most senior captains. It was at the control of the world’s largest and most advanced commercial jetliner the A380, when he and his fellow officers were faced with their greatest challenge. This pivotal event has changed his life forever. Richard has written two books, QF32, which tells the story of the incident in gripping detail and Fly, covering leadership, teamwork, risk-assessment, decision-making, crisis management, lifelong resilience and more.

In the 2016 Australia Day Honours, Richard de Crespigny was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for his significant service to the aviation industry, both nationally and internationally, particularly to flight safety and to the community.
