Baltimore Gas and Electric helps customers cut energy costs with Oracle Opower

The utility uses Opower Equity and Affordability to help low-income households access financial assistance and information to help reduce power bills.

Energy affordability is a serious problem for low-income households, but many people are not aware of programs that can help them lower utility costs. Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE), Maryland's largest natural gas and electric utility, wanted to help nearly 200,000 customers who were eligible but hadn't yet applied for financial assistance programs. BGE uses Oracle Utilities Opower Equity and Affordability, Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) Weekly Usage Alerts, and Video Home Energy Reports to give personalized home energy reports to customers with low to moderate income, as well as connect them to energy and financial assistance programs. Engagement is excellent, and 80% of BGE's customers find the information useful, signaling a likely increase in project enrollment to come.
