Product(s) Affected: WebLogic Server, WebLogic Express, and WebLogic Platform

This notification applies in both WebLogic Server and WebLogic Express. Throughout the rest of this advisory, references to WebLogic Server apply to both products.

I. NOTIFICATION

In WebLogic Server 7.0 and WebLogic Platform 7.0, customers who wished to use JCE were instructed to download JCE 1.2 from Sun Microsystems' web site. Sun has announced that JCE 1.2.1 was signed by a certificate that is expiring on July 27th, 2005. This will affect WebLogic Server 7.0 customers that are:

Using JCE 1.2.1.
Using Java 2 Security.

Typically this is done by customers using cryptography provided by an organization other than BEA (e.g.: nCipher SSL accelerators, Bouncy Castle cryptographic providers). These customers will begin experiencing a failure of the signedBy clause for the JCE jar file on or around July 25th, depending on the time zone of the server. The server will likely run successfully until it reboots and then fail to reboot.

These customers will need to upgrade to JCE 1.2.2 which resolves this problem.

II. INSTRUCTIONS

Applications using JCE 1.2.1 should be considered for an upgrade to JCE 1.2.2.
