Security Advisory: (BEA06-81.02)
From: Oracle Corporation
Minor Subject: Anonymous binds to the embedded LDAP server are allowed.
Product(s) Affected: WebLogic Server and WebLogic Express
This security advisory (BEA06-81.02) contains updated information in Section II.
This security advisory (BEA06-81.02) contains corrected instructions for modifying the classpath on WebLogic Server 8.1 and 7.0. Please disregard Security Advisory BEA06-81.01 as this advisory BEA06-81.02 supersedes it.
Threat level: High
Remote anonymous binds are possible to the embedded LDAP server.
Severity: High
It might be possible to view user entries (but not attributes) as well as launch a denial of service attack against the embedded LDAP server.
A problem was identified that could potentially cause a security vulnerability in certain versions of WebLogic Server. A patch is available to correct this problem (see Section II). Oracle treats potential security problems with a high degree of urgency and endeavors to take appropriate steps to help ensure the security of our customers' systems. As a result, Oracle strongly suggests the following actions:
This vulnerability occurs in both WebLogic Server and WebLogic Express. Subsequent references in this advisory to WebLogic Server are intended to encompass both products.
All sites are vulnerable to this attack.
It is possible for a remote user to bind anonymously to the embedded LDAP server and 1) look at user entries (but not attributes) if the schema can be guessed, or 2) launch a denial of service attack against the embedded LDAP server by creating many connections to the LDAP server.
This patch resolves the issue by adding an attribute to restrict anonymous bind. After applying this path and rebooting, anonymous bind will be restricted by default.
The following versions of WebLogic Server are affected by this vulnerability
Oracle strongly recommends the following course of actions:
WebLogic Server 9.0
WebLogic Server 9.1 will include the functionality in this patch.
WebLogic Server 8.1
WebLogic Server 8.1 Service Pack 6 will include the functionality in this patch.
WebLogic Server 7.0
WebLogic Server 7.0 Service Pack 7 will include the functionality in this patch.
Oracle strongly suggests that customers apply the remedies recommended in all our security advisories. Oracle also urges customers to apply every Service/Maintenance Pack as they are released. Service/Maintenance Packs include a roll-up of all bug fixes for each version of the product, as well as each of the prior Service/Maintenance Packs. Service/Maintenance Packs.
