Virtual Machines (VMs)

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) Compute VMs provide secure and elastic compute capacity in the cloud for workloads ranging from small development projects to large-scale, global applications such as real-time communication platforms. Flexible shapes enable users to optimize VM resources with customized processor and memory values for improved price performance.

OCI is recognized as a Visionary in the 2022 Gartner® Magic Quadrant™ for Cloud Infrastructure and Platform Services.

New capabilities for radically simple cloud infrastructure

OCI’s new capabilities range from compute instances and block volumes that can dynamically adjust to meet demand to high performance NVIDIA GPU instances.

451 Research: Five tactics for taming the cloud complexity beast

There is a perfect storm of complexity in the cloud infrastructure market. Flexible vCPU and RAM from OCI can reduce complexity and better meet application needs.

Why choose OCI virtual machines?

  • Flexibility in VM shapes

Configure virtual machines to precisely meet application requirements. Flexible VMs offer nonstandard configurations like 3vCPUs and 13GB of RAM for AMD, Arm, and Intel processors.

  • Designed for a variety of workloads

OCI offers standard shapes, dense I/O shapes, GPU shapes, and optimized shapes for general purpose, database, hardware-accelerated, and HPC workloads.

  • Optimized for Oracle apps

Use OCI’s migration, provisioning and management tools for Oracle applications like E-Business Suite, JD Edwards, PeopleSoft, Siebel, and Hyperion for seamless cloud migration.

  • Cost-effective platform for ISVs

ISVs can build, deploy, and run their applications on OCI because of its high performance and consistently lower costs.

Mazda cuts costs by 50% and boosts performance by 70% with Oracle Cloud

“We migrated a global inventory management system that tracks thousands of automotive repair parts and accessories from an on-premises system to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. We've already achieved a 70% increase in performance and cut our 5-year total cost of ownership in half.”

Masahiko Tamura
General Manager, Supply Chain Systems Department, Mazda Motor Corporation

WorkForce Software moves from Azure to Oracle, ups performance 40%

“We saw a financial performance that allowed us just out of the gate to save 40% in our CapEx expenditure, and with the great performance we're getting from OCI, the ROI that we deliver with our suite continues to get better and better.”

Mike Morini
Chief Executive Officer, WorkForce Software

National Grid analyzes weather 40% better on Oracle Cloud

“Oracle Cloud Infrastructure allows us to process tens of thousands of models, so we can train our algorithms very quickly. It’s one of the best platforms in the world for the type of work we do.”

James Kelloway
Energy Intelligence Manager, National Grid ESO

Specialized gains flexibility to dynamically scale virtual machines

“In OCI, we just flip a switch to instantly scale up for more capacity and then scale back down when our traffic levels off. You just can’t beat that.”

Tommy Pham
Senior Manager, Database Cloud Platform, Specialized Bicycle Components

Customize vCPUs and memory for virtual machines

A flexible shape lets users customize the number of virtual CPUs (vCPUs) and the amount of memory (RAM) when launching or resizing virtual machines. The network bandwidth and number of virtual network interfaces (VNICs) scale proportionately with the number of OCPUs. This flexibility lets engineers build VMs that match their workloads, enabling the organization to optimize performance and minimize cost.

Features
  • Support AMD, Arm-based Ampere, and Intel processors
  • Maximum cores: 80 (160 vCPUs)
  • Maximum memory per core: 64 GB per core
  • Minimum memory: equivalent to number of cores (starting at 1 GB)
  • Maximum memory: 256 GB

VMs with predefined cores and memory

Standard instances are designed for general-purpose workloads and suitable for a wide range of applications and use cases. Standard shapes provide a balance of cores, memory, and network resources, and are available with Intel, AMD, and Arm-based processors. Dense I/O shapes can be used for large databases, big data workloads, and applications that require high-performance local storage. GPU shapes include Intel or AMD CPUs and NVIDIA graphics processors for AI/ML workloads and video rendering. Optimized shapes are ideal for high performance computing (HPC) workloads.

Features
  • Standard shapes support AMD, Arm-based Ampere, and Intel processors
  • Additional shapes include dense I/O, GPU, optimized, and DVH
  • Dense I/O shapes for applications that require high-performance local storage
  • GPU shapes for hardware-accelerated workloads
  • Optimized shapes for workloads that require high-frequency processor cores

Optimize utilization and security for virtual machines

Burstable instances provide a baseline level of CPU performance with the ability to burst to a higher level to support occasional spikes in usage. Burstable instances are designed for scenarios where an instance is typically idle, or has low CPU utilization with occasional spikes in usage. They're also ideal for scaled-down workloads that don't require a full core.

Shielded instances harden the firmware security on bare metal hosts and virtual machines (VMs) to defend against malicious boot level software. Shielded instances use the combination of Secure Boot, Measured Boot, and the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) to harden the firmware security on OCI instances.

Preemptible instances improve economics for workloads that only need to run for brief periods or that can be interrupted when the capacity is reclaimed. Preemptible instances behave the same as regular compute instances, but the capacity is reclaimed when it's needed elsewhere, and the instances are terminated.

On-demand, reserved, and dedicated instances

On-demand capacity

Pay for only the compute capacity consumed. With on-demand capacity, customers pay for compute capacity by the second, and pay only for the seconds that their instances are running.

Reserved capacity

Reserve capacity for future usage, and ensure that capacity is available to create compute instances whenever it’s needed. When instances are terminated, the capacity is returned to the reservation, and the unused capacity in the reservation increases.

Dedicated capacity

Run VM instances on dedicated servers that are a single tenant and not shared with other customers. This feature lets customers meet compliance and regulatory requirements or to meet host-based licensing requirements.

Announcing new capabilities for radically simple cloud infrastructure

Greg Pavlik, Senior Vice President, Oracle

Core cloud infrastructure may seem, at first glance, to be rather plain. Like the engine of your car, its purpose is to get the job done, consistently and quietly. But, just as our automobile engines have been evolving from gasoline-powered to hybrid and electric motors…
